I am deeply alarmed by the disturbing reports emerging from Azad Jammu & Kashmir, particularly the communications blackout, restrictions on access to information, and the reported use of force against peaceful protesters.

No authority should ever silence people for peacefully raising their voices. The rights to protest, speak freely, and access information are fundamental democratic freedoms and basic human rights, not privileges to be withdrawn when they become inconvenient.

Suppressing dissent, restricting communication, and creating an atmosphere of fear only deepens anger, mistrust, and division. These actions do not strengthen democracy. They weaken it. They do not restore stability. They risk inflaming tensions even further.

Wherever we come from, we must never stay silent when human rights and democratic freedoms are under threat. The people affected deserve to be heard, treated with dignity, and protected from intimidation, violence, and repression.

I stand in solidarity with all those calling for justice, accountability, restraint, and the immediate restoration of fundamental freedoms. True leadership is not shown by silencing peaceful voices, but by having the courage to listen to them.

After a very strong start to June, my step count has dipped slightly over the last few days. Still averaging good numbers, still on track for 60 miles this month, and still fully motivated 💪

Some days are stronger than others, but the important thing is to keep moving forward.

This challenge was never about perfection. It’s about consistency, improving my health, and raising money for Cancer Research UK ❤️

One step at a time, we keep going 🚶‍♂️

🌙✨ BEDFORD EID FESTIVAL 2026 ✨🌙

This weekend, thousands of people from across Bedford and beyond will come together for the Bedford Eid Festival.

For me, this is about much more than rides, food stalls and entertainment, although there will be plenty of all three!

It is about community.

It is about families spending time together, friends catching up, neighbours meeting neighbours and people from different backgrounds celebrating side by side.

One of the things I love most about Bedford is our diversity. We are a town made up of people from many cultures, faiths and backgrounds, yet when we come together at events like this, we are reminded that there is far more that unites us than divides us.

Whether you are celebrating Eid, curious to learn more about different cultures, or simply looking for a great family day out, you will receive a warm Bedford welcome.

Labour Group leader cllr Abu Sultan (Cauldwell) said his group remained “absolutely opposed to the demolition of residential homes”.

“When we talk about demolition, we cannot reduce it to coloured lines on a map or figures in a report,” he said.

“We are talking about people’s homes, places where families have lived for years, sometimes decades. Places filled with memories, stability, and community.”

🚧 ROADWORKS UPDATE | ELSTOW ROAD BRIDGE 🚧

Residents are advised that overnight roadworks will be taking place on Elstow Road Bridge for 4 nights starting from Sunday 1 June.

The works will include road patching repairs, gully cleaning works and refreshing road markings and lining to help improve the condition and safety of the carriageway.

📍 Elstow Road between Firbank Road and Grosvenor Avenue

⏰ Road closure nightly from 8pm to 5am

Please note: 🚗 No parking on affected sections during closure hours
🚌 Overnight bus services on Elstow Road will be temporarily suspended
🚑 Emergency services and resident access will be maintained
↪ Diversions via London Road and Mile Road
