Yesterday evening we held another informal tutorial get together at the Basingstoke Masonic Centre. A good turn out with brethren from Vyne, Elvetham and Oakley Lodges present. We took a look at Oakley Lodge’s officer’s collars and explained the symbolism of the jewel to the office. Also, we looked at Oakley’s original Bible and working tools both dating back to 1857. After this there was a Q&A session, then we withdrew to the bar to socialise.

A skill worth acquiring.

That’s certainly a different way of looking at comic book heroes.

MARVEL WEEK: THE LESSON BEHIND THE HEROES

Over the past week, we've explored Wolverine, Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange through a Masonic lens.

Not because they were Freemasons.

They weren't.

Not because Marvel was secretly teaching Masonic ritual.

It wasn't.

But because great stories endure for a reason.

They speak to something timeless within us.

Wolverine taught us about governing the beast within.

Hulk taught us about understanding and integrating our shadow.

Iron Man taught us that our gifts find their highest purpose in service to others.

Spider-Man reminded us that responsibility is the price we pay for the talents we've been given.

Doctor Strange showed us that wisdom begins where ego ends.

Different characters.

Different stories.

Different struggles.

Yet all pointing toward the same destination.

The journey of becoming a better human being.

That's why the Marvel Cinematic Universe resonates with so many people.

It's more than superheroes.

More than action scenes.

More than special effects.

More than memorable one-liners.

At its heart, it's a collection of stories about growth.

Failure.

Redemption.

Sacrifice.

Duty.

Purpose.

And the struggle to become something greater than we were yesterday.

In many ways, that's what Freemasonry is about too.

Not perfection.

Progress.

Not arriving.

Traveling.

Not becoming better than other men.

Becoming better than the man you were yesterday.

The truth is, every one of us is on the same path.

Some of us are just beginning.

Some have traveled a little farther.

Some are carrying burdens others cannot see.

Some are moving quickly.

Others are taking smaller steps.

And that's okay.

The goal is not to compare your journey to someone else's.

The goal is to keep moving.

With courage when the road is difficult.

With dedication when the work becomes hard.

With compassion for those who struggle.

And with Brotherly Love for all who travel beside us.

Because every Mason was once a beginner.

Every teacher was once a student.

Every Perfect Ashlar was once rough stone.

So whether you're taking giant strides or simply putting one foot in front of the other, remember this:

The path is the same.

The Work is the same.

The destination is the same.

And no matter where you find yourself along the journey...

This evening we held a teach-in or tutorial for our new brethren. This is not a lodge of instruction, it’s all about introducing our new Brethren to the etiquette and customs of Freemasonry. First we demonstrated how a late arriving Brother should enter the lodge. Next we toured the lodge room explaining the offices in a lodge and what they do. After this we repaired to the bar. This is not just open to Oakley brethren, but all Basingstoke masons. New brethren are particularly encouraged to come along.

The next session is on Monday 27th July, 18:30, with the bar opening at 20:00.
