The Society was founded in 1975, shortly after the change in Local Government when Barnoldswick, for centuries a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, became for administrative purposes incorporated into Lancashire.

Barnoldswick History Society’s next meeting will be on Thursday 30th July when the guest speaker will be Mike Clarke whose talk will be about the history of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal with particular emphasis on Barnoldswick.

Mike is the founder and president of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Society and has been involved with industrial heritage for many years and has written extensively on canal history.

To recognise his commitment to the heritage of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, the Canal and River Trust named one of the Bank Newton locks after him.

ERNEST EVANS - FROM WEAVER TO MASTER OF NATURAL SCIENCES

The story of how East Lancashire's Mechanics' Institutes improved working class lives. How one man's Botany Classes and outdoor explorations of Pendle and the Ribble Valley inspired scientists and cartographers to travel the world.
