Last month Retford Rotary’s fearless President, Mary found time to visit the Clark Lane Play Park in Tuxford to try out a rope bridge. Fortunately, she avoided injuries despite the occasional wobble.

Earlier this year the Club’s Percy Laws Memorial Committee had donated £1,995 as a contribution to the new play park for younger children and the money covered the cost and installation of the rope bridge.

They were met by Councillor Moorhouse and Clare Fox, Clerk and Responsible Financial Office and were sincerely thanked for Rotary's interest and financial support.

Retford Rotary’s latest meeting saw a presentation from two students from The Elizabethan Academy, representing their Interact Club, which was established by the Rotary Club and school about a year ago.
The Club started with 6 members and now has 18.

Daisy (President) and Katarina (Community Outreach) were invited to share the inspiring work they have led over the past year. They described the projects they have delivered, from a bake sale to a ball, which raised funds for charity, and also the valuable skills of leadership, teamwork and communication that they have developed.

They also expressed their thanks to the Rotary Club for their support and for providing such meaningful opportunities.

Rotary members were very impressed by the confidence and positivity shown by Daisy and Katrina and feel sure that the Club will go from strength to strength.

At last Monday’s meeting of Retford Rotary Club members heard from Pastor Steve Williams about the The Oasis Centre. Kilton, Worksop.

He described the origin and development of the centre, from a derelict building on 2 acres of land, to its present fine building with magnificent gardens and open spaces. The project also meets at the West Hill Centre in Ordsall, Retford.

Steve also told members about the 35 projects the centre runs for people of all ages, from 0 to 102! These projects include parents and toddlers’ group, children’s clubs, working with special needs children and young people, youth groups and gardening for, particularly men in crisis and many more.

Our Plant Sale next Saturday, June 20th is raising funds for the Oasis Centre, as well as for other Rotary supported international charities.

So, if you would like to help this worthwhile project, get down to the Retford Market on Saturday and pick up some plants at bargain prices!

This year’s Retford Rotary Young Artist Competition came to a climax last week.

In this 10th year of running the competition and exhibition, the theme was “The Joy of Friendship”.

There were 13 schools and Retford Arts Hub’s childrens’ art class who took part and submitted over 300 entries, giving our panel of local judges a difficult, but pleasurable task of trying to choose the various winners.

A very appreciative audience packed The Grove Methodist Church and Centre, which provided a spectacular backdrop to the art display. Retford’s Deputy Mayor (now Mayor), Councillor Malachi Carroll in full regalia, handed out certificates and prizes.

An exhibition of all the entries was open all day on Saturday and saw a good number of people call in.

A delightful time was had by all, thank you, and we look forward to next year’s!

How much does Lego weigh?

Retford Rotary enjoyed meeting children of all ages at the Country Market to play games and learn about Rotary in Retford.

This collection of Lego weighed 681 grams. Martha guessed the nearest. A £10 book voucher from Wonderland Bookshop in Carolgate is the prize.

Thanks to everyone who took part and The Hummingbird Collective for organising the event.
