Responding to the Government's scrapping of the 'cliff-edge' that stops carers receiving all Carers Allowance as soon as they exceed the earnings limit, Kirsty McHugh, Chief Executive of Carers Trust, said:

"It is great news that the Government is acting to remove the Carer’s Allowance cliff edge. This has long been a concerning part of our benefits system, penalising thousands of carers who are juggling paid work with their caring role. Carers all over the country should now be able to take comfort that they can earn that bit more without being inadvertently plunged into debt.

"This is an important and long-overdue reform. We would urge the Government to use this change as a springboard for a wider and deeper reform of Carer’s Allowance – a benefit that remains stuck in the 70s and must be made fit for the future. The eligibility criteria remain too high and the payment itself too low for carers providing vital care. No carer should have to face financial hardship because of their caring responsibilities, and we need a fairer, modern system to reflect that."
