Five years ago, Godiva was rescued from the streets of Penang Island, and her life changed forever 🤎✨

Thanks to the compassionate partnership between our IAPWA Penang team and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), which has ended the killing of stray dogs on the island since 2017, Godiva became one of the 8,500 dogs to be given a second chance through this life-changing project.

Today, she is thriving in a loving home 🏡

Godiva's wonderful family keeps in touch with our IAPWA Penang team and recently shared this update 👇🏼

"Godiva has brought so much joy and love to our family. Unfortunately, we lost our other dog two years ago, but Godiva now enjoys being the queen of the house. Two months ago, she had a dental scale and polish and needed two teeth extracted. Since then, we've been brushing her teeth every day, and thankfully she doesn't mind because she loves her toothpaste! I can't thank you enough for bringing her into our lives."

It's hard to watch these scenes, but it's even harder knowing this is everyday life for the animals who call this shelter home. 💔

UPDATE: Wonderful news about Sassy 🐶💛

Earlier this month, we shared that long-term patient Sassy had been found in a heartbreaking condition after the IAPWA Penang team returned from their TNR work one evening. A severe gum infection, along with several ongoing health challenges, had left her extremely weak, with a badly swollen and painful face.

Since starting treatment and antibiotics, we’re so happy to share that the swelling has finally gone down and Sassy is now strong enough to undergo her much-needed dental procedure next week. She will have a full dental scale and any necessary extractions to relieve her pain and improve her quality of life.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to Sassy’s appeal and helped her get the care she urgently needed. She and the team are incredibly grateful 🫶

Little Jordy was found clinging to life near our IAPWA Penang centre. He was in a devastating state and must have been suffering for days, struggling to eat, drink or even keep his eyes open. We can only imagine the pain, fear and loneliness he endured as he battled to survive.

Upon rescue, Jordy was rushed straight to the vets, where urgent tests were carried out to determine the severity of his condition. The results revealed a catalogue of heartbreaking injuries and illnesses.

He has been diagnosed with a mandibular symphyseal fracture, meaning his lower jaw has been fractured and separated, severe dehydration, a secondary respiratory tract infection, and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), a condition that weakens a cat's immune system and leaves him more vulnerable to further infections.

It is an enormous burden for one small cat to carry, but despite everything he has endured, Jordy is still fighting.

Our veterinary team has already begun intensive treatment, including X-rays, fitting a nasogastric feeding tube, and starting intensive IV fluid therapy and antibiotics.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘆'𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 🚨

Jordy urgently needs surgery to repair his broken jaw. This procedure is vital if he is to continue his treatment and recovery journey and have the best possible chance of overcoming the challenges that still lie ahead.

Sadly, our IAPWA Penang team is already tremendously stretched, and Jordy's veterinary treatment is extensive and costly. Yet when a vulnerable animal arrives at our doors in desperate need, we cannot simply turn them away.

A special reunion for lovely Lola 🐶💖

This weekend, our IAPWA Penang team had the pleasure of welcoming back a very familiar face...

Lola was adopted from one of our Straits Quay adoption drives on Penang Island back in April, when she was just a tiny puppy. So, when she returned to visit the team at a recent adoption drive, it was a truly heartwarming moment for everyone who remembered her.

Now a happy, confident young dog, Lola has grown so much since finding her forever home. Full of love and personality, she charmed everyone she met and even showed off a few new tricks, much to the delight of the team ✨

Seeing dogs like Lola thriving in loving homes is what our work is all about. Born into uncertainty and facing a difficult start in life on the streets, she now has everything every dog deserves – safety, happiness and a family who adores her.

Long-term patient Sassy continues to battle a severe gum infection alongside several ongoing health challenges, including heart and kidney issues. She is also living with an eye condition that developed after someone poured Dettol into her eye.

Despite everything she has been through, this brave girl keeps fighting.

𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 🐱🤍

Since our last update, Rocky has been making positive progress, although his journey has certainly been a bumpy one.

One of the biggest challenges the team has faced is keeping Rocky's feeding tube in place while he is still unable to eat on his own. This cheeky boy keeps finding ways to remove it!

Rocky has also been suffering from severe constipation and, initially, had not passed any stool since his rescue in early May. Thankfully, after receiving an e***a at the clinic, he was finally able to p**p, bringing some much-needed relief.

He is continuing his treatment with plenty of fluids, including daily subcutaneous fluids, to help him stay hydrated and regain his strength.

Not content with making life easy for his carers, Rocky also somehow managed to remove the sutures from both his left eye and mouth following surgery. These will need to be redone once he is strong enough. The good news is that half of his palate has already healed, and his latest blood work has come back looking good.

The WIC team clearly has a cheeky, lively little boy in their care, but we're so grateful that he is slowly but surely getting better. However, Rocky still has a long road ahead of him, and any donations towards his ongoing care would be hugely appreciated.

This is the reality for hundreds of dogs and cats at the shelter in Borneo. 💔

Many have spent incredibly long stretches in these overcrowded enclosures, desperate for a kind touch or a second chance. The staff do everything they can, but they simply don't have the space or resources to cope with the number of animals arriving every single week.

That's why we're now in Phase 2 of this project: creating safer housing, improving disease control and veterinary care, and giving these animals a genuine pathway to adoption.

Sassy came into the care of our IAPWA Penang team a few years ago with a severely damaged eye. It is believed that someone had applied Dettol to her eye in an attempt to help her, unintentionally causing irreversible damage to this poor girl.

It was also discovered that, on top of her eye condition, Sassy was suffering from heart and kidney issues, high blood pressure, and a benign tumour. Due to the complexity of her needs, releasing her was never an option, and she became a long-term patient and much-loved member of our IAPWA Penang family.

Therefore, the team were devastated when Sassy’s health took a heartbreaking turn this week 💔

After returning from daily TNR work, the team found Sassy in a very poor condition – she was extremely weak, visibly struggling, and had a severely swollen face. She was immediately rushed to the veterinary clinic for emergency out-of-hours treatment.

Tests revealed a severe gum infection that had progressed to the point where Sassy was in significant pain, and the vet recommended the removal of all her teeth. Sassy has already endured so much in her life, and now she faces yet another painful battle.

Right now, Sassy urgently needs kind sponsors to fund her surgery and ongoing veterinary care. She will never lead a conventional life and will require specialist life-long care, but by sending a kind gift today, you can ensure she has everything she needs to live a happy, dignified life after all she's been through.
