Our Men's Shed is a Scottish Charity No: SCO51028. We run a community ukulele group., open to everyone.

The Shed is a place where men of all ages, who have spare time on their hands, can go for a chat and a cup of tea and enjoy the company of other men.

EASTER GET TOGETHER
We had a large turnout for the Mens Shed/Ukulele group’s Easter Lunch at Auchterarder Golf Club on Thursday 9th April. The meal was of the usual high quality and from the chatter going on, everyone enjoyed the event. To test the brains, there were 2 short quizzes with keen competition to win the prizes of chocolate Easter Eggs.

AUCHTERARDER UKES BRING HAPPINESS
At the Auchterarder and Aberuthven Community event in the Aytoun Hall today, Auchterarder Ukes gave a stunning performance of music which brought joy and happiness to all attending. Playing songs from ‘20s and ‘50s, people sang along to familiar songs. Twelve players from the ukulele group played during the morning and they all enjoyed playing for the event. BANKING HUBS EXPLAINED TO MENS SHED
On Tuesday 24th February we had an interesting talk by Lesley Wilson from Cash Access UK. This is the company responsible for providing the buildings which the Post Office and our banks now use in communities like ours, where individual bank offices have disappeared. There are now 211 banking hubs throughout the UK and N Ireland. Cash Accsss UK provide the building and equipment and it is up to individual banks if they wish to use the facility. So if your bank is not represented at a bank hub, it is that decision of that bank and not a fault of the banking hubs. Paying in or taking out cash can be done on any day of the week and is not restricted to the day your bank is in attendance at the hub. Improvements are being made to make printing of bank statements possible but this will take time to roll out throughout the network. Lesley answered a number of questions from the members.

MENS SHED HELP LOCAL BLOOM GROUP
A number of our Shed members volunteered to help Auchterarder Bloom Association in making new staging for their poly tunnel, where they grow the plants which they plant out throughout our town in spring and Summer.
Their previous staging was a mishmash of benches of varying heights and by recycling timber from these benches we have made several new stagings. This will make their work easier when potting up plants and it increases the working area for them. Our photos show our members using their carpentry skills in between cups of tea and the final results look very good. Well done Shedders.

MENS SHED DOUBLE WORKSHOP CAPACITY
How do you erect a workshop on one day? The photos show Auchterarder and District Mens Shed’s new workshop being put together. This new purpose built workshop was funded by Friends of St Margaret’s Hospital and Auchterarder Community Trust Fund to whom we are most grateful for their financial help. The new workshop doubles the work area and will allow more members to get involved in making things. The new workshop is called the “John Boyd Shed” after founding member and Shed secretary since the Mens Shed was formed in 2017.
Current projects include making new staging for Auchterarder Bloom Association’s new poly tunnel, fitting out the new workshop with work benches and making hedgehog boxes to try to reverse the decline in these little garden creatures.

KEEPING YOUR HOME WARM
Our Mens Shed had an interesting talk today on heat. Nathan from the Scottish charity “The Heat Project”, gave us a very interesting and thought provoking presentation on how to improve and conserve heat in your house. Nathan outlined the various ways help can offered from several agencies to improve insulation of your house. The Heat Project offer home visits to advise owners how to improve their homes and guide owners through the various pathways to get help. Organisations like Warm Homes Scotland and Home Energy Scotland can offer advice and help with improving your house. After a number of questions from the audience, Shed Chairman Tim Hickey gave a vote of thanks.

AUCHTERARDER UKES SING OUT LOUD
On 5th December Auchterarder Ukes played a thoroughly enjoyable concert for the residents of Oakbank Care Home in Crieff. The large group of residents joined in singing songs from the past including songs by Buddy Holly and the Everley Brothers. The more modern songs and especially the Scottish songs were enjoyed by the audience who tapped their feet and sang along heartily. Afterwards over a cup of tea we were able to have time to talk with the residents.

RECORD CELEBRATION BY MENS SHED
On 2nd December Auchterarder and District Mens Shed held their annual Christmas lunch at Auchterarder Golf Club. The large turnout of members was a record for this event. After an excellent meal the members were entertained with a Christmas quiz and a visit from Santa and his helper who gave goodie bags to everyone. A most enjoyable afternoon was had by all. If you would be interested in learning more about Auchterarder and District Mens Shed, just pop in on Tuesdays or Thursdays 2-4pm to see what goes on. We are a fun group who chat over a cuppa, make things and we have a ukulele group, Auchterarder Ukes, who meet on Tuesdays 2-3pm. Contact [email protected]

MENS SHED DO IT AGAIN
Another very successful day at Auchterarder Christmas in The Community Fair on Sunday 30th November. After much preparatory work over the past few months, Auchterarder and District Mens Shed had another great day selling all the objects which they had made. Most popular were the log reindeers and the carved wood spirit bird nest boxes, followed closely by the beautiful hand turned wood pens. A ukulele played Christmas songs, promoting the fun and success of Auchterarder Ukes, the group organised by the Mens Shed.

LOCAL GP TALKS to MENS SHED
Auchterarder and District Mens Shed had an interesting talk today from Dr Lindgard. It was a wide ranging presentation including an overview of modern general medical practice and the NHS. With an ageing population, our expectations of the NHS may be higher than, what in reality can be provided with the current pressure on NHS services and insufficient staffing levels.
It came as a surprise to many to hear about unemployment among doctors due to insufficient funding for GP practices. With more funding, GP practices could employ more staff which would mean more patients being seen more quickly.
There was a lively question time from the Shedders. Dr Lindgard reassured us to have confidence in the future of the NHS and GP medical practice in particular.

AUCHTERARDER UKES HIT NEW HEIGHTS
On Friday 3rd October Auchterarder Ukes, Auchterarder and District Mens Shed ukulele group, played at Perth City Chambers at the opening of the Scottish Mens Shed Association Annual Gathering. Over one hundred delegates sang along to the group who played several well known songs and they gave Auchterarder Ukes a terrific round of applause at the end.
This was a wonderful experience for the group to play for such a large audience and in such a prestigious venue. Onwards and upwards.
