The June newsletter from CAP Enterprise landed in inboxes yesterday. This month: what's happening to the CIC model and what it means for legitimate social enterprises, a free resource from the Jo Cox Foundation, and a look at what's coming from CAP over the next three years.

Loneliness after release from prison is one of the most significant and least talked about barriers to successful rehabilitation.

At CAP Enterprise, our Through the Gates project supports men and women through the criminal justice system — in both custodial and community settings. In a new piece for our blog, Hayleigh writes about what loneliness actually looks like for people leaving prison, why it affects men and women differently, and why addressing it has to be part of how we think about rehabilitation.

It's an important read.

This weekend is the Great Get Together, 10 years on from the death of Jo Cox, and communities across the UK are marking it by doing what she believed in most: bringing people together 🤝
If you'd like to host something in your community, the Jo Cox Foundation has a free toolkit to help you get started, and micro-grants of up to £5,000 for community event organisers.

The GREAT Get Together 19 – 21 JUNE 2026 The Great Get Together is the UK’s annual celebration of everything that connects  our communities, inspired by Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common than that which divides us. This year’s Great Get Together will take place on 19-21 June 2026 ...

Has the CIC bubble burst? 🫧

The Community Interest Company model has done, and continues to do, brilliant things for communities across the UK. But a growing pattern of misuse is making funders more cautious and putting legitimate CICs under more scrutiny than they deserve.
I've written about what I'm seeing, what it means for organisations doing genuine work, and what distinguishes the good from the opportunistic.

June is Pride Month — and for social enterprises, it's also a moment to reflect on something that sits at the heart of the model.
Social enterprises exist to serve communities. All of them. That means building organisations where people feel seen, valued, and genuinely included — not as an afterthought or a policy, but as a founding principle.
The best social enterprises I've worked with in Kent and Medway don't treat inclusion as a separate agenda. It's just how they operate. In who they hire, who they serve, who they make decisions with.
That's worth celebrating this month — and worth holding onto the other eleven.
Happy Pride Month.

That's May from us. 👋
Two blogs published, a newsletter in inboxes, and a week spent celebrating Fusion Maidstone and Kent Arts and Wellbeing — two organisations doing extraordinary work for mental health and wellbeing in our communities.
If anything we've shared this month has been useful, the best thing you can do is pass it on. Someone in your network is probably asking the same questions.
And if you're not on our mailing list — June's edition is already in the works. https://www.capenterprise.co.uk/newsletters

Hope you had a good bank holiday weekend. ☀️
As we head into June, we're already thinking about what we want to bring you next — and we'd love your input.
Is there a question you've been sitting on? A topic you'd like CAP to cover? Something about starting or running a social enterprise that you've never quite found a straight answer to?
Drop it in the comments. We're always listening — and the best content we produce usually starts with a question someone actually asked.

One of the questions I get almost as often as "what is a social enterprise?" is this one: "how does the money actually work?"
Can you pay yourself? How is it taxed? What makes it different from just running a small business — or setting up a charity?
I've written the guide I wish had existed when people first started coming to me with these questions. It covers the structures, the rules around paying yourself as a director, what the CIC asset lock actually means in plain English, and why getting this right from the start saves a significant amount of stress later.
If you're exploring your options, or you know someone who is — this one's worth a read. https://www.capenterprise.co.uk/blog
