Neelam lived with her husband and 2 children. He was physically, emotionally and financially abusive towards her for 11 years. She shared that he started abusing her during her first pregnancy. Today we delivered presentation to front line welfare professionals at Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas, Sandhurst. The Armed Forces community is unique, and service life can make it harder to ask for help for numerous reasons. Presentations such as this not only helps raise awareness about the project, but also fosters trust in support services and ensures soldiers to seek help for issues often deemed taboo.

On Wednesday 25th March I joined representatives from The Citizens Advice Bureau in Farnborough at the Maddhat Shamuha community group meeting for elderly Nepalese residents. We were providing information and guidance on Domestic Abuse and how to report it. It was a great opportunity to meet this lovely group and answer some of their questions.

If you attend or organise a community group and would like to arrange input or advice on a topic such as Domestic Abuse and reporting then please do email the Positive Action Team and we will happily support you:

Today at ‘Madhat Samuha’, Smriti delivered presentation on financial abuse and ways to report such abuse. In many Nepali families, the need to protect “honour” and family reputation is paramount. This often leads to victims remaining silent about abuse, including financial coercion and to avoid shame. We recognise that delivering presentations and having discussions on financial abuse to the Nepali community in the UK is essential because this community faces unique, intersectional challenges that often prevent them from recognizing, reporting, or escaping coercive control and economic exploitation.
