🚨 Closing ceremony of the European Youth Parliament for Water - EYPW

At the Palais du Rhin, headquarters of the Grand Est Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs / Ministry of Culture, the 17th European Youth Parliament for Water has officially concluded in Strasbourg, marking the start of an ambitious new chapter for youth-led water governance in Europe!

The final day opened with the election of the new 17th EYPW Board, who will lead the network for the next two years:
Clara Vadez — President
Roko Šarić — Vice-President
Noémie Guigue — Second Vice-President

Following their election, delegates debated and adopted their joint action plan and Common Commitment Statement, structured around 5 pillars for their 2026–2028 mandate. Key projects already set for action include:

💧 A transboundary card game designed for youth across diverse European river basins.

🎨 An art exhibition on water and diplomacy, scheduled for Spring 2027.

The parliament closed with the Official Closing Ceremony:

Opening remarks were delivered by Antonella CAGNOLATI, President of Solidarity Water Europe, setting a forward-looking tone for youth governance.

Chantal Jeanpert, elected representative of the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace, delivered a powerful speech, praising the passion of the young leaders: "You are the future, and your engagement is vital to overcoming past decisions and protecting our shared water resources."

Matthias Ackermann, President of the Upper Rhine Council, officially committed to integrating the youth delegates' commitments into the ongoing work of the Upper Rhine Council!

A heartfelt thank you to all 60 delegates, partners, and organizers who made this edition a success. The future of European water governance is bright, bold, and youth-led! 🌊✨

🚨 European Youth Parliament for Water — Day 4

From regional political dialogues to interactive negotiation simulations, Day 4 marked a pivotal transition for our 60 delegates as they moved from field observations to strategic advocacy and action! 🇪🇺💧

The morning opened in Freiburg with introductory remarks from the Regierungspräsidium Freiburg, setting the stage for delegates to plan their collective future projects and prepare for the upcoming EYPW Board elections.

The afternoon focused on the art of transboundary diplomacy and negotiation:

✨ Youth Voice at the Upper Rhine Water Conference: A highlight of the day was the participation of a youth delegation at the Upper Rhine Water Conference, organized by the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace Toute l'Alsace . Our delegates presented their active involvement in water governance across different transboundary scales directly to key regional decision-makers and partners.

🌍 Perspectives from the Sahel & West Africa: Quentin PARENT from the Geneva Water Hub, a Centre of Competence on Water for Peace shared invaluable insights on how water serves as a vehicle for cooperation and social cohesion in fragile contexts.

🎮 Transboundary Cooperation in Action: Delegates put theory into practice through two immersive negotiation games— "River Basin Game" moderated by Quentin Parent (Geneva Water Hub) and another led by the 16th EYPW Board ("Common borders, Common Rivers"). These simulations gave participants a hands-on experience of navigating complex negotiations over water resource allocation between upstream and downstream stakeholders.

🚨 European Youth Parliament for Water — Day 3

Today was all about bridging theory with reality on the ground! Under the theme "Uniting across borders, sectors, and generations", our 60 delegates crossed the Upper Rhine region to explore concrete, real-world solutions to complex water challenges in France, Germany, and Switzerland. 🇪🇺💧

The day began with a collective visit to the Integrated Rhine Programme (Integriertes Rheinprogramm) to understand large-scale flood protection and ecological restoration along the river.

Delegates then split into thematic subgroups for field explorations across three countries:

🏔️ Lauch Dam (France): Examining sustainable water management, drinking water security, and river flow support mechanisms facing climate change impacts.

⚡ Schluchsee Cavern Hydropower Plant (Germany): Analyzing clean energy production and renewable storage leveraging water resources in the Black Forest.

🔬 Basel Wastewater Treatment Plant (Switzerland): Discovering cutting-edge innovation and high-tech standards defining the "wastewater treatment plant of the future".

Back together in Freiburg im Breisgau, delegates gathered to debrief, pool their observations, and connect local technical solutions with broader transboundary water policy.

From energy and climate adaptation to sanitation and ecological flow: seeing cooperation in action across three borders reminds us that water governance is as practical as it is political!

🚨 European Youth Parliament for Water — Day 2

From stakeholder mapping to real-life examples of transboundary cooperation, our 60 delegates spent Day 2 exploring who shapes transboundary water governance — and how different actors can work together across borders.

The day opened with a deep dive into the Rhine Basin, followed by rich discussions on cooperation in the Upper Rhine region, with perspectives from the Regierungspräsidium Freiburg, the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace (CeA) Toute l'Alsace, and the Struktur- und Genehmigungsdirektion Süd Neustadt (SGD Süd).

We then explored cooperation in action:
Scientific collaboration through Eucor - The European Campus and the UNESCO Chair “Rivers and Heritage
Energy recovery on the Rhine with EDF HYDRO Est
Health and environmental action through APRONA and the Ermès-ii-rhin project

A particularly inspiring moment came from Magdalena Zivanovic and Lisa Oppermann, President and Vice-President of the 16th EYPW. Sharing their experiences, achievements and lessons learned, they reminded us that each new generation of young water leaders builds on the experience of those who came before them.

And the learning continued across Europe, with young perspectives from the Sava, Danube and Scheldt basins — showing once again that both water challenges and solutions extend far beyond borders.

Different basins. Different stakeholders. One shared challenge: strengthening cooperation for our shared waters.

🚨 Launching the 17th European Youth Parliament for Water — uniting across borders, sectors and generations for sustainable river basin governance

Today, at the European Parliament, Solidarity Water Europe and the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace opened the 17th edition of the European Youth Parliament for Water - EYPW, bringing together 50 young water leaders from 10 river basins across Europe, representinf 18 countries.

Over the coming week, participants will exchange experiences, strengthen their capacities, collaborate across borders and sectors, and develop joint recommendations on transboundary water cooperation and river basin governance.

The opening ceremony highlighted a fundamental principle: young people must have a meaningful role in decisions shaping the future of water. They are not only tomorrow’s water leaders — they are already contributing to the solutions needed today.

As Thomas Bajada, Member of the European Parliament and rapporteur for the Water Resilience Strategy, reminded us:
“Water flows across every challenge Europe faces, and young people are the ones who will be directly affected by the decisions we make today. Water is our future.”

Since the first European Youth Parliament for Water in 1998, young people have been at the heart of ISW’s commitment to participatory water governance — connecting local realities with European and global agendas.
From watersheds to Europe, from dialogue to action: youth are helping shape the future of water governance.
