With river levels low this week, our team was able to cross into the upper valley and visit partner communities in Navosa. Traditionally farming communities, they are now working with us to expand their voivoi (pandanus) plantations through women’s groups, building capacity to meet the growing demand for pandanus leaves in Fiji and beyond. Supporting livelihoods, preserving tradition, and creating new opportunities. 🌿✨

This week, three more wild vine weaving training sessions are underway in Vaturova District, with community coordinators training additional villages within their own district. It’s all about working laterally: building a larger collective, sharing skills, and creating the capacity to take on bigger opportunities together.

Many thanks to for supporting this work.

Vinaka (thank you) to Mereani from Nairai Island for generously sharing her process and knowledge with all of us. 🌿✨

Weaving is a time-intensive tradition, with many steps involved, especially in producing mud-dyed black somo leaves used in traditional designs. Through solar dryers, we are helping reduce the labor and time needed to cure pandanus, while providing market access by purchasing directly at the village gate.

We believe that when traditional skills can generate livelihoods, they are more likely to be passed on to the next generation. By supporting artisans today, we can help ensure these traditions continue to thrive tomorrow. We think that's worth supporting, and we hope you do too. 🤎🌿

From early-morning ferry lines in Honiara to banana boats reaching villages in Malaita Province and canoes connecting neighboring communities, working with artisans is a journey of accompaniment. It means understanding their environment, materials, and unique knowledge, and sharing those stories through each handmade piece with the rest of the world. 🐚🤍
