Across from the Old Parliament, history is quite literally outside the front door.

The building dates back to 1880, when shops occupied the ground floor and residences sat above. Today, its historic character has been given a very different life: 42 individually designed rooms and suites, a rooftop terrace, a spa and the Athens home of one of Greece’s best-known restaurants.

Inside, it is a quieter kind of luxury. Marble, timber, velvet, high ceilings and generous terraces, with views towards Lycabettus Hill and the Old Parliament in some rooms.

Then there is dinner.

Fresh fish, Mediterranean ingredients and dishes treated with the kind of restraint that lets the produce do the talking.

Some restorations are about making an old place look new. This one was about making sure it did not.

For decades, the restoration followed the existing village rather than replacing it. Old stone houses became suites, former utility spaces became shared areas, the olive mill was kept intact and the original paths still lead through gardens and orchards.

Inside, the architecture is just as honest. Rough stone, timber, terracotta, arches and old fireplaces sit alongside the comforts you expect from a modern stay.

Even the most unusual suite is housed inside the former olive mill, where a centuries-old millstone remains part of the room.

It feels less like a resort designed to look traditional and more like a real piece of Crete that happens to have very good beds.

Imagine leaving Milan and Bali behind to restore a ruined castle in the Tuscan hills.

That is more or less how this story began.

In the 1980s, Carlo and Aurora Baccheschi Berti discovered the ruins of a former 12th-century fortress and moved their family to Maremma. More than 12 years went into restoring it, with Carlo bringing his eye for design and craftsmanship, and Aurora shaping the interiors, gardens and food.

You can still feel that personal history everywhere. Rooms are filled with antique pieces, art and objects collected on the family’s travels, sitting alongside original stone and brick walls.

It feels less like a hotel designed by committee and more like someone’s very beautiful, very well-travelled home.

The mansion has roots going back centuries, with Baroque details, old frescoes, original textures and a courtyard that have all been carefully brought back to life. The renovation does not try to make everything look new either. Stone, clay, tin and old wood sit alongside cleaner contemporary lines and deeper, softer tones.

Even the rooms keep a bit of that tension between old and new, with some sitting beneath the original Baroque roof and others opening onto the historic courtyard.

A very old building, with no intention of feeling stuck in the past.

This began as a way of showing people Greece. The boat came later.

Founded in 1949 by historian and guide Diogenis Venetopoulos, the family business was built around sharing the history, culture and archaeological heritage of Greece with international travellers.

Today, the journeys reach far beyond Greece, but the philosophy has stayed remarkably consistent: small ships, small groups, local communities, regional food and places that larger vessels simply cannot reach.

It is less about collecting destinations and more about getting under their skin.

And after three generations, that original curiosity is still very much on board.

Somewhere between the Acropolis, Monastiraki and the morning coffee crowd.

Set on Agia Eirini Square, this design-led hotel puts you right in the middle of central Athens, close enough to walk to the Acropolis and Plaka, but away from the most obvious tourist routes.

Inside, the city takes a different form. A 1930s modernist building has been reworked with sculptural curves, marble, mosaic, bronze and contemporary Greek art, while the open bar and restaurant bring the energy of the square indoors.

The kind of place where you can step out for breakfast and accidentally spend the whole day exploring.

The architecture does not try to compete with Mykonos. It lets the island do the talking.

Whitewashed volumes follow the natural slope of the land, with rounded edges, stone and plenty of open space between them. From a distance, it almost feels like a small Mykonian neighbourhood rather than a resort.

Inside, the same idea continues. Rooms open onto private terraces, some with pools or hot tubs, while the Aegean keeps appearing between the buildings.

It is a pretty good argument for letting the view be the main feature.
