b-aware is a local initiative focused on preserving and protecting the seas. It is created by a group of enthusiastic environmental specialists and nature lovers who aim to share the wealth Egypt’s marine environment has to offer. Egypt harbors a variety of aquatic ecosystems from the Red Sea and the Mediterranean to the Nile and Lake Qaroun. These ecosystems are a heritage of substantial ecologic
al processes that affect us generation after another. Very often populations are not aware of such environments and are alienated from the role they play in our daily lives. With almost half the oxygen we breathe coming from photosynthetic phytoplankton activities in the oceans, something as involuntary as respiring is not alienated from aquatic ecosystems after all. Upon exposure to natural or anthropogenic threats, the complex biological, chemical, and physical processes that govern the seas are altered. This consequently affects the marine life and disrupts the food chain overall. For that matter, we take it our mission to bring citizens closer to the marine life especially that of the Red Sea. The Red Sea alone has at least 15% of fish species not found any where else in the world. Its exclusive and unique development has been paved for 40 million years to nurture its contrasting reefs amid desert landscape. We aim to establish a baseline for awareness and bring the public closer to the Red Sea environment. The initiative intends to surface current threats and familiarize the local and non-local communities to understand and preserve such ecosystem. This is an opportunity for all of us to come together and be the tool of conservation itself.
