We kicked off the conference in Paderborn with the VL/HCC Graduate Consortium Opening, bringing together the next generation of researchers for an exciting start to the week.

We were excited to welcome Mark Minas from Universität der Bundeswehr München and to explore how we can design formalisms while preserving what matters.

While Brad Myers from Carnegie Mellon University is holding his keynote "History and Future of AI in Interaction Techniques", Day 2 is off to an inspiring start. 🤖✨ From the earliest interaction techniques to the age of generative AI, he takes us on a journey through how the way we interact with computers has evolved, and where it might go next.

What happens when AI, human-centered computing, and the future of programming come together?

At & 2026, these three inspiring keynote speakers will explore exactly that — from the history of AI interaction techniques to socially explainable AI and the future of programming education.

𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙄 𝙞𝙣 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙨
From the automatic spell-checkers of the 1960s to ChatGPT and similar tools: AI has been used for decades to improve the building blocks of our interfaces, with varying degrees of success. Brad Myers puts this history into context and shows how today’s much more powerful AI could be used to build new interaction techniques that are easy for developers to implement.

Existing approaches to explainable AI primarily focus on making complex algorithms technically comprehensible. However, they often fail to address who is actually supposed to understand the explanation and in what social context. Kirsten Thommes explains why explainability should be conceived as a social practice and introduces “Social Explainable AI,” a concept that adapts explanations step by step to users and their context.

For 30 years, block-based programming has been considered the pinnacle of school education. Yet, at best, it’s just the base camp, says Alexander Repenning. Generative AI is fundamentally changing what programming even means: even prompting is a form of computational thinking. His talk makes the case for shifting from pure coding tools to genuine tools for computational thinking and uses his “Proxy-Based Programming” approach to demonstrate how programming can become more human and easier to understand.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿'𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲:
Recent advances in computing have led to further co-mingling between computers and human society. People now live surrounded by, and as part of, many socio-technical systems. However, as these systems have grown in complexity, they have also become increasingly difficult for humans to understand and direct toward productive and meaningful ends

For this year’s event, we encourage graduate students and other researchers to submit their investigation in generative AI systems and people’s perceived sense of agency when interacting with, and/or programming, such systems.
