🐣On 10 May 2019, the very first Red-necked Amazon chick hatched at our facility.🦜
This was not only the first chick of this species in Germany, but also the first successful captive breeding of the species worldwide.
Today, that very chick has matured into a visually striking and defensive male. This year marked another important milestone: the female he is paired with produced her first fertile egg.
We are delighted to announce not only the hatching of the first F1-generation chick of this species, but also that our male has proven to be an exceptional father. During a recent nest check, we were able to observe and document two healthy chicks being attentively cared for and fed by both parents. ❤️

🐣Am 10. Mai 2019 schlüpfte in unserer Einrichtung das weltweit erste Küken der Rotnackenamazone.🦜
Dies war nicht nur das erste Küken dieser Art in Deutschland, sondern zugleich auch die erste erfolgreiche Nachzucht dieser Art in menschlicher Obhut weltweit.
Heute hat sich dieses Küken zu einem beeindruckenden und defensiven Männchen entwickelt. In diesem Jahr wurde ein weiterer wichtiger Meilenstein erreicht: Das Weibchen, mit dem er verpaart ist, legte ihr erstes befruchtetes Ei.
Mit großer Freude dürfen wir bekannt geben, dass nicht nur das erste Küken der F1-Generation dieser Art geschlüpft ist, sondern dass sich unser Männchen auch als außergewöhnlich fürsorglicher Vater erwiesen hat. Bei einer kürzlich durchgeführten Nistkastenkontrolle konnten wir zwei gesunde Küken beobachten und dokumentieren, die von beiden Eltern aufmerksam versorgt und gefüttert wurden.❤️

Chick Update 🦜

Today we would like to share a new update on our chicks and their development.

The first pictures show two Spix’s Macaw chicks that hatched on May 9 and May 10, 2026. They now weigh 329 g and 365 g and have already reached the halfway point of their nestling period.

The next picture shows an older Spix’s Macaw chick that hatched on April 29 and currently weighs 372 g.

After that, you can see two of our youngest Spix’s Macaw chicks. They hatched on May 18 and May 22 and currently weigh 183 g and 127 g.
The chicks are just starting to open their eyes and their first small feathers are beginning to appear.

The final video shows our first St. Vincent Amazon chick of the year at just two days old. In the video, it is being fed by its mother.

All chicks are developing very well.
We look forward to taking you along on their journey over the coming weeks and sharing more updates with you. ✨🦜

Küken Update 🦜
Heute gibt es ein neues Update zu unseren Küken und ihrer Entwicklung.

Die ersten Bilder zeigen zwei Spix-Ara-Küken, die am 9. und 10.Mai 2026 geschlüpft sind. Mit einem Gewicht von 329 g und 365 g haben sie inzwischen die Hälfte ihrer Nestlingszeit erreicht.

Auf dem nächsten Bild seht ihr ein etwas älteres Spix-Ara-Küken vom 29.04., das aktuell 372 g wiegt.

Anschließend folgen zwei unserer jüngsten Spix-Ara-Küken. Sie sind am 18.05. und 22.05. geschlüpft und wiegen derzeit 183 g und 127 g. Die Küken sind gerade dabei ihre Augen zu öffnen und bekommen ihre ersten kleinen Federn.

Das letzte Video zeigt unser erstes St.-Vincent-Küken in diesen Jahr im Alter von nur zwei Tagen. Diese wird dabei gerade von dem Muttertier gefüttert.

Alle Küken entwickeln sich sehr gut.

🌍🦜 World Environment Day 2026 🌿
Today is a reminder of how important it is to protect our environment. While topics such as forests, oceans, and climate often take center stage, individual species also play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems including parrots.
Parrots are far more than just fascinating and colorful birds. In their natural habitats, they contribute to the diversity and stability of ecosystems. Through their feeding habits, they disperse seeds over long distances, support forest regeneration, and in some cases even help pollinate plants.
As so called umbrella species, their protection extends far beyond a single species. When parrot habitats are preserved, many other plant and animal species that share the same ecosystems benefit as well.
However, many parrot species are threatened, and their populations are declining across numerous regions. With their loss, important ecological functions that they have fulfilled for generations could disappear as well.💚
This is why parrot conservation means far more than protecting a single species, it helps preserve biodiversity and supports the long term stability of entire ecosystems.

Happy World Parrot Day 🦜🌿

Today is a reminder of how important the protection of parrot species is. Many species are endangered and struggle to survive due to habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, and human impact. That is exactly why World Parrot Day exists: to raise awareness about these issues and to show how important conservation is for the future of these animals.

Species conservation does not only mean protecting individual animals, but also preserving entire species for the long term. Without protection efforts, many parrot species would continue to decline or even disappear completely. That is why long term speciesconservation projects are so important.

This is exactly what we are working for as well. Our mission is to responsibly breed endangered parrot species and, in the long term, make it possible to reintroduce them back into the wild. By doing this, we hope to help ensure that these species will continue to exist in the future.
World Parrot Day reminds us how important it is to raise awareness for endangered species. 🦜💚

Enrichment is a key part of modern parrot management in ex-situ conservation programs 🦜

Today, our Lesser Antillean amazon received handmade enrichment boxes filled with rose hips, encouraging exploration, manipulation, foraging, and other natural behaviours.

This activity is part of a goal-based enrichment planning program focused on promoting targeted natural behaviour expression and improving overall welfare in our birds.

Enjoy watching them as much as our Amazons enjoy their enrichment every day! 💚

Happy Father’s Day 🪺💛

Not only the mothers, but also the fathers play an important role in raising the chicks and caring for the eggs and young birds. 🐣🦜

While the female sits on the eggs and keeps the chicks warm, the male provides her with food for several weeks. Later, the fathers also begin feeding and cleaning the chicks and protecting them together with the female. They also help teach the young birds important skills, such as how to eat on their own. In addition, they carefully watch over and defend their family.

As seen in the video, the father carefully checks the egg, feeds the chicks, and plays with them inside the nest.

In Spix’s macaws, the males are especially caring towards the female and the chicks. They sleep next to the female in the nest, and when she lays an egg, the male gently cleans and massages her with his tongue to help during the laying process.

Denn nicht nur die Mütter sondern auch die Väter spielen bei der Aufzucht eine wichtige Rolle und kümmern sich fürsorglich um Eier und Küken.🐣🦜

Während das Weibchen auf den Eiern sitzt und die Küken hudert (wärmt), versorgt das Männchen sie über mehrere Wochen mit Futter. Später beginnen die Väter selbst damit, die Küken zu füttern, zu putzen und gemeinsam mit dem Weibchen sie zu beschützen. Dabei helfen sie den Jungtieren wesentliche Sachen bei der Futteraufnahme zu erlernen. Dazu bewachen und verteidigen sie ihre Familie um jeden Preis.

Wie im Video zu sehen ist, untersucht der Vater aufmerksam das Ei, füttert die Jungtiere und spielt mit ihnen im Nest.

Bei Spix-Aras kümmern sich die Männchen besonders fürsorglich um das Weibchen und die Küken. Sie schlafen neben der Henne im Nest. Und wenn das Weibchen ein Ei legt, putzen die Spix-Männchen und massieren das Weibchen mit der Zunge, um den Legevorgang zu erleichtern.

Our first Spix’s Macaw chicks of the year are here! 🐣🦜

The first chicks hatched on April 30, with another following a few days later on May 5.

A newly hatched chick is completely helpless and requires intensive care. One of our highest priorities is natural breeding, where the young birds are raised by their parents whenever possible in order to support their natural development.
As you can see in the photo, the chicks remain with their parents and are being cared for by them. The male and female are taing turns raising and feeding the chicks- Did you know? 👀

A newly hatched Spix‘ macaw weighs only around 12 grams and is fully grown after just 75 days.

We regularly monitor the chicks’ development in a way that is as stress-free as possible — and only when the parents are absent so as not to disturb them. During these checks, we pay close attention to their weight, appearance, and overall health.

Our young Spix’s macaws are doing very well and are healthy.

Unsere ersten Spix-Ara Küken in diesem Jahr sind da! 🐣🦜

Die ersten Küken sind am 30.04. geschlüpft, ein weiteres einige Tage später am 05.05.

Ein Küken ist nach dem Schlupf völlig hilflos und benötigt intensive Fürsorge. Besonders wichtig ist uns dabei die Naturbrut, bei der die Jungtiere möglichst bei ihren Elterntieren aufwachsen, um die natürliche Aufzucht zu fördern.
Wie auf dem Bild erkennbar ist, befinden sich die Kücken bei ihren Elterntieren und werden dort versorgt. Die Elternvögel wechseln sich dabei bei der Aufzucht der Küken ab.

Ein frisch geschlüpftes Küken wiegt nur etwa 12 g und ist bereits nach 75 Tagen völlig ausgewachsen.
Wir kontrollieren regelmäßig und möglichst stressfrei die Entwicklung der Jungtiere - ausschließlich in der Abwesenheit der Eltern, um sie nicht zu stören. Dabei achten wir auf Gewicht, Erscheinungsbild und die allgemeine Gesundheit der Küken.

Unsere Jungen Spixe sind wohlauf und gesund.

🌼Spring is in the air!
The first warm rays of sunshine are making their way through. Nature is awakening, and our parrots are becoming active as well. Both the blue macaws and our Amazon parrots have started their breeding season. After recently informing you about the first eggs, today we’re sharing more impressions from our facility. Of course, we’re really hoping to introduce you to the first chicks of 2026 very soon.

Breeding season also means careful egg management 🥚

Even with natural breeding, eggs are regularly monitored. They are briefly removed, weighed, and measured to ensure proper development.

Not every egg is fertilized, and identifying these differences is an important part of breeding management.

If needed, eggs can be temporarily placed in incubators with controlled temperature and humidity to provide optimal conditions and minimize risks.

These steps help support healthy development and successful breeding outcomes.

Die Brutzeit bedeutet auch sorgfältiges Eimanagement 🥚

Selbst bei natürlicher Brut werden die Eier regelmäßig kontrolliert. Sie werden kurzzeitig entnommen, gewogen und vermessen, um eine gesunde Entwicklung sicherzustellen.

Nicht jedes Ei ist befruchtet – diese Unterschiede zu erkennen, ist ein wichtiger Teil des Zuchtmanagements.

Bei Bedarf können Eier vorübergehend in Brutkästen mit kontrollierter Temperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit gelegt werden, um optimale Bedingungen zu schaffen und Risiken zu minimieren.

Breeding season vs. maintenance diet 🦜

Spix’s macaws are not fed the same way all year round — for good reason.

During the breeding season, their evening diet is higher in calories, including more nuts and an energy-rich diet to support reproduction.

During the maintenance phase, the diet contains less fat and protein to counteract quick weight gain — adapted to their natural needs.

👉 Nutrition changes with the season — just like in the wild.

Brutzeit vs. Erhaltungsfütterung 🦜

Spix-Aras werden nicht das ganze Jahr gleich gefüttert – aus gutem Grund.

Während der Brutzeit ist die Abendfütterung kalorienreicher, mit mehr Nüssen und einer energy-rich diet zur Unterstützung der Fortpflanzung.

In der Erhaltungsfütterung enthält die Ernährung weniger Fett und Protein, um eine schnelle Gewichtszunahme zu vermeiden – angepasst an den natürlichen Bedarf.

👉 Ernährung verändert sich mit der Saison – genau wie in der Natur.
