On a quiet morning, my eye caught the past, present and future of this historic building at Scharlooweg 104.
High on the scaffolding, a mason carefully removed the worn plaster, revealing the historic wall beneath, almost as if the building lifted her skirt to offer a glimpse of the craftsmanship that has carried her through generations.
Curaçao’s historic buildings reflect remarkable resourcefulness. With bricks once difficult to obtain, builders used locally sourced coral and natural stone, protected by lime-based plaster to withstand the tropical climate and endure for centuries.
Now, a new chapter is being written for the façade of Scharlooweg 104.
With careful restoration and a fresh protective layer of plaster, this beautiful monument will once again be dressed to impress carrying her past proudly into the future.
Because preserving heritage is about more than restoring walls. It is about safeguarding the craftsmanship, memories and stories they hold for generations to come.
The past remains. The present takes care of it. And the future gets to experience it.
