🐢 Klein Training Weekend Recap 🐢

Our volunteer team just wrapped an intense training weekend on Klein Curaçao, and the data tells the story:

✅ 3 nest confirmations
✅ 1 relocation
✅ 2 dry runs
✅ 6 attempts
✅ 1 full nesting process observed, start to finish
✅ 1 remarkable attempt: 224 meters covered in 4 hours, with 8 body pits

We also had a surprise hatching at Mermaid Beach 🎉 pure joy for the team.

But conservation work isn’t only good news. We sadly found a deceased nesting Hawksbill turtle in the middle of the island, a hard reminder of why this work matters.

14 participants, a great mix of veteran and brand new volunteers, gave their full weekend to this. Sleep was optional. Dedication was not. 😴

We got word that hatchlings were crawling to the ocean at Porto Marie beach. The dive team cordoned off the nest and reported it. About 60 hatchlings had already made it into the water on their own.

Our great volunteers dug out the nest, finding 106 empty shells and 38 more hatchlings, which we released that night using a runway of daybeds.

Best part: it was a loggerhead nest. 💚💚💚

a few tiny sea turtle hatchlings needed a helping hand. After carefully excavating the nest, our volunteers found these little stragglers still waiting beneath the sand. They were safely kept in a bucket until sunset, when they were released to begin their incredible journey to the sea. Miss Universe Fatima Bosch recently visited Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao (STCC), where she learned about the island's sea turtle conservation efforts. During her visit, she joined the team in several conservation activities, gaining firsthand experience in protecting these remarkable marine animals and their habitats. As a token of appreciation, STCC presented her with a special gift made by LIMPI and engraved by Elite Laser Works Curacao to commemorate her visit and support for sea turtle conservation. Thanks to all people involved in making this possible.

Last week STCC held its very first Science Night. The turnout at the soon-to-open Rescue Center was beyond anything we expected, and seeing so many people come together for sea turtle conservation was truly inspiring.
From volunteers and researchers to community members and ocean lovers, the energy in the room showed just how much people care about protecting our turtles and our ocean. 🌊✨

Thank you all for a wonderful evening of science. A big thank you to our special guests, the minister Health Environment and Nature, mister Tyrone Boekhout, USA Consul General, mister Ramon Negron, and Rector Magnificus of the University of Curaçao dr. Stella van Rijn.

We are putting the finishing touches on the Rescue Center and hope to officially open in early August.

Sometimes, little heroes just need a helping hand. 🐢💚
A number of baby loggerhead sea turtles were left behind in their nest. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, they were carefully excavated and given a second chance. 🌅
At sunset, these tiny hatchlings were released onto the beach to begin their incredible journey of a lifetime across the ocean. 🌊✨
Wishing them calm seas, safe travels, and hoping they'll return to these shores one day to continue the circle of life. 💙🐢

Join STCC and help coordinate the research and monitoring work behind our sea turtle conservation efforts in Curaçao. You’ll work alongside our Scientific Committee, volunteers, and partner organizations on everything from data management to field operations.

What we’re looking for: a master’s degree in a relevant field, strong organizational and project coordination skills, and a genuine passion for marine conservation.
