On our off time at the railroad we focus on maintenance. One of the crucial bits of maintenance, particularly on our steamers is the cleaning of the boiler tubes. The process includes opening up the smoke box, Using a bore brush to punch through the tubes and pull out all the soot and particulate. Once everything has collected in the smoke box and fire box we take a long tube blower and blow out all the particulate. This bit of maintenance ensures maximum heat transfer in the boiler which allows us to run at a higher efficiency.
