LifeCycles Project Society Improving community health by bringing people together to grow, harvest, and share local foods.

LifeCycles cultivates community health from the ground up by connecting people, the food they eat and the land it comes from. We support people in gaining the knowledge, skills and resources they need to access or grow their own food in a way that fosters biodiversity and enhances our urban environment. Today is Nowshin's last day at LifeCycles and we're going to really miss her!

As our IT Systems Assistant, hired through the Canada Summer Jobs program, Nowshin brought her enormous skill set to our team to expertly design and build us a whole new website! The new website she created is way more user-friendly and allows us to easily edit and update it. We love it 😍

Check out our new website at: https://lifecyclesproject.ca/

Today is National Seniors Day and we want to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible contributions of our many senior volunteers! Their dedication, wisdom, and generosity of spirit make such a difference in our community and in the success of our programs. 💚

We’d also like to thank the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for their support in helping fund and make many of our programs more accessible for seniors.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Community Sharing Day this weekend! What a fabulous day it was! It was so great to see so many kids and families enjoying the orchard, riding their bikes out, tasting apples, and sharing the harvest. 🍎

We also wanted to share the results of our Apple Tasting! King of Tompkins County received the most votes overall — and we couldn’t be more thrilled! 🍏

The King of Tompkins County trees are the oldest apple trees at Welland Community Orchard. They pre-date the rest of the orchard and were planted before Rex Welland’s backyard orchard, when this land was still agricultural land. At around 100 years old, they continue to produce crisp, juicy apples with the perfect balance of tart and sweet. We love them too! 💚

Things have been busy at Bear Hill Farm!

Over the past month, we’ve been working with an amazing team of contractors to prep the soil, install drainage across the farm, install a propagation house, and build other infrastructure to support the future farmers who will be growing here.

📷 #2: An aerial view showing the network of underground drainage trenches being laid across the farm in order to improve soil drainage.

📷 #3: Foster of Hilldown Ag Services who has been working with our team as an agricultural water consultant to plan and design the drainage system.

📷 #4: Mateo and Logan from Mateos Trucking and Excavation who have been hard at work supporting site prep and drainage installation.

📷 #5: Elizabeth from Sea View Tractor Service adding organic amendments to the soil to increase soil fertility.

📷 #6: James from Ethereal Fabrication and Rey from Etcetera Handywork & Creations installing the propagation house to help farmers get set up for the season.

Farmer applications open mid-November— stay tuned! 🌱
