🍎 Apple season is finally here! 🍏✨

Come learn how to turn those autumn apples into delicious, fresh juice at the beautiful Welland Legacy Orchard! 🌳

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll get to try out a variety of pressing and juicing tools, including fruit crushers, bladder presses, steam juicers, manual presses, and even some fun DIY options you can try at home!
And the best part? You’ll take home a jar of delicious, hand-pressed juice to enjoy!

Thanks to the Government of Canada's Local Food Infrastructure Fund, Welland Orchard’s composting got a huge upgrade! ✨🐞

🌿🪱Our new shredder and tumbler quickly breaks down organic waste, in record time! This returns vital nutrients right back to our orchard to grow fresh food for the community! ❤️🍏

🍎 Come and learn how to safely preserve your extra fruit to last through the winter!

This workshop will cover the basics of water bath canning and set you up with everything you need to know to safely make your own shelf-stable preserves at home. We’ll also introduce some other preservation methods, including fermenting apple juice into apple cider vinegar!

At the end of the workshop, you’ll receive a jar of jam to take home. 🍓

🌱 The Seed Library is back in action! 🌸

With the library now open, we are looking for wonderful volunteers this summer to help us clean and package seeds! 🌾 This past week, we were threshing some native plants like lupin, sneezeweed, and wooly sunflower. 🌻✨

Back by popular demand! 🌸 We’ve decided to run our Natural Dyeing workshop again this summer.

This workshop will walk you through all the steps of how to use locally grown flowers and natural dyeing to create beautiful patterns on fabric. Using the technique of flower pounding, all participants will get to create their own naturally-dyed tote bag to take home. This workshop will also include a demonstration of how to prepare fabric for natural dyeing so that you can continue to practice this new skill at home!

We‘re really excited to officially announce the Bear Hill Farm Pilot Project!

Bear Hill Farm is a five-year pilot project to reactivate underused agricultural lands for food production in the capital region. Our goal is to provide tenured land access to established farm businesses in the region. We've been busy getting the land ready for farmers by working on drainage systems, removing invasive plants, and building shared infrastructure for farm businesses to use. Farm business applications will be opening this fall — stay tuned for more details!

🌿 Learn the art of botanical drawing in the beautiful Welland Community Orchard!

Come discover the amazing diversity of plants and learn the basics of drawing beautiful flora in this approachable, beginner-friendly workshop. We'll explore key tips and tricks for observing plants and capturing their unique details through drawing.

No experience is necessary! Paper and pencils will be provided, but feel free to bring your own favourite art supplies if you have them. ✏️ 🎨

🥧 Learn to make a delicious apple pie from scratch!

Join us for a hands-on workshop where you’ll make your own apple pie to take home and enjoy.

Taking advantage of peak apple season, this workshop features fruit rescued through our Fruit Tree Project. Many of our local heritage apples are exceptional baking apples—while they may not be as tasty eaten fresh, they lend themselves beautifully to being baked into a delicious pie.

You’ll learn the fundamentals of pastry making, how to weave a beautiful lattice crust, and how to perfectly balance the spices and sweetness of your filling. You’ll leave with your own freshly made pie, plus a copy of the recipe to recreate it at home!

Did you know that LifeCycles has a Farm Gleaning Program?

Last week, we harvested these beautiful carrots from Paulz Farm!🥕

Through our Farm Gleaning Program, we work with local farmers to harvest or pick up surplus produce that might otherwise go to waste. The produce is then distributed to more than 75 community agencies through the Food Share Network, helping increase access to local produce for those who need it most.

Participating farms also receive charitable tax receipts for the fair market value of their donated produce, allowing them to recover value from surplus or unharvestable crops while supporting community food access and reducing food waste.

A huge thank you to Paulz Farm for being a farm gleaning partner! 💚
