What an incredible day! Thanks to everyone who joined us on another “Ventures into Sustainable Recreation” event back in September.

We saw birds, lots of native plants, shells and even had a special aquatic visitor! Participants reflected on what it means to recreate sustainably, and how we can embody this in our everyday lives. We are very thankful to the Land, the Waters, and the incredible sunny day we had!

📍This event took place on the unceded territories of the SC’IANEW First Nations, who have stewarded and exercised their sovereignty on these lands and waters since time immemorial.

Have you seen a dead bird on campus? 🪶

According to a study last year, an average of 1,095 birds die from window collisions on UVic campus between September and February. 🐦‍⬛

We need your help to see where these collisions and deaths are occurring! A student has kindly created a bird safe campus project on INaturalist so we can see what species and where bird deaths are happening on campus.

📸 Next time you see a dead bird at UVic. We invite you to take a picture and upload it to INaturalist. If the bird is tagged as dead and on campus, it will automatically be added to the project. The link to the project is also on our link tree 🔗!

Today there are several events to recognize orange shirt day on campus, and we strongly encourage participating! Tomorrow is the National day for Truth and Reconciliation, to recognize and honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. There are plenty of opportunities to honour, listen, and celebrate Indigenous cultures and resilience.
We will be posting a statement and resources shortly. 🧡

🦚 Missed our last bird walk? No worries; because we have another one coming up!

🐦‍⬛Join the UVSP and Dr. Krista De Groot on an on campus bird tour, where we will learn about local birds and also how we can facilitate bird safe infrastructure! No registration necessary, just show up at 10 am :)

🐾We will be going around campus to different buildings, and choosing accessible paths.

🦉 Dr. De Groot has made invaluable scientific and advocacy contributions to bird safety in infrastructures, and has been a key part of our bird safe campus campaign as well as the important paper and research that found that an average of 1,095 birds die from window collisions every fall at the University of Victoria. We are so thankful for her joining us and leading the tour!

📍This event will take place at UVic, on the unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the university stands, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and WSÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with these lands continue to this day.

Meet the UVSP Staff – Al Tantalidou is the newest Communications Officer! 🖋️🕊️

Al (they/them) is a fourth year undergraduate student of English and Environmental Studies. They grew up on Southern Coast Salish (Snoqualmie Tribe) territories of ‘Seattle’, and Anishinaabe territories of ‘Chicago’ and are of Greek + Pontic Greek descent.

Since immigrating to the unceded lands of the Lǝkǝŋǝn & WSÁNEĆ peoples Al has been involved in many social justice organizations – on campus they help edit the Campus Community Garden’s zine Sundew, are Coordinator for ESSA’s zine Essence, and have written for newspaper the Martlet.

The UVSP’s mission to reconceptualize sustainability resonates with Al’s principles as they are especially passionate about food security, literary ecocriticism, and environmental journalism. Their personal motto is essentially “feed people; first food then the news.”

When not playing table-top games or roller-skating Al is always up for a chat, though conversation may be briefly interrupted for impromptu birdwatching 🐦‍⬛
