USW welcomes the announcement by the Government of Canada launching the Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator and supporting the proposed expansion of Teck's Trail Operations in British Columbia.

“Steelworkers at Teck’s Trail Operations have spent generations building the expertise that makes this operation a global leader in critical minerals processing,” said Scott Lunny, USW Western Canada Director. “This investment is a positive step toward strengthening Canada's industrial capacity, supporting good union jobs and ensuring more of our critical minerals are processed here at home.”

“We’ve been talking about critical minerals and the potential for expansion for a couple of years now, so it’s exciting to see real progress being made in Trail,” said Chris Walker, USW Local 480 President.

Workers at Western Forest Products Value-Added Division (WFP VAD) in Chemainus, B.C., have joined the United Steelworkers union (USW). The successful union organizing campaign was driven by a desire for better representation and a stronger voice on the job with a union that will fight for improvements that forestry workers need and deserve.

The workers at WFP VAD perform essential work in the forest industry through their mill work and kiln drying. They are an important part of Western Forest Products Inc., British Columbia’s forestry industry and the communities that depend on it.

Every year on April 28, we pay tribute to the workers who have lost their lives due to workplace incidents or industrial diseases. In 2025, 138 workers in British Columbia died from workplace injuries or diseases.

Local 480 will be hosting a Day of Mourning event on Tuesday, April 28. We invite all members, their families, and the community to join us in honoring those we have lost. The event will begin with a march from the Local 480 Hall at 3:45 pm, proceeding to the Workers Memorial Monument on Bay Avenue in Trail. A ceremony will follow at 4:00 pm.
