Invitation to the person who vandalized our Alex Fest Signs -

We welcome an opportunity to discuss our approach to putting Reconciliation into Action, as we also decolonize our work. The quick response to your vandalism is to clarify that stolen means unceded (which is generally accepted). Yes it is a difficult word, and now imagine how much more difficult it was for Indigenous People when colonization took over their land and punished them for using their language and practicing their culture.

When we use stolen it is to be clear about the impacts of colonization. And while unceded is a nicer way to say stolen it doesn't change the truth. BC was the only Province where 95% of the land was not surrendered by Indigenous People. What this means is - there were no treaties in place in 95% of BC (not that treaties were a perfect system). Unlearning colonizing principles is difficult and uncomfortable as we have all been impacted by colonization and even settlers have been impacted in negative ways.

The work we are doing at Alex House to build relationship and trust with Semiahmoo First Nation has been a gift. As an organization we have benefited from the land we operate on for over 100 years. To be clear we have benefited while Semiahmoo First Nation struggled to secure their rights, freedoms, and even more recently safe drinking water. These are all foundational things that should be available to all Canadians, that all Canadians should want for each other.

We know this work is the right thing to be doing especially when the negative rhetoric against Indigenous People gets louder.

We understand not everyone believes what we believe organizationally, and we don't expect others to use stolen.

What we do expect is that people will speak directly too us, and learn with us (or not) without resorting to vandalism.

We stand with Semiahmoo First Nation, and we invite others to learn with us as we aspire to Allyship.

If you aspire to Allyship please stand up to racism.

Join us at National Indigenous People's Day on June 19th. If you are interested in volunteering for the day Alex House will be supporting the volunteer recruitment and volunteers at the event hosted by Semiahmoo First Nation.
