African Canadian Continuing Education Society Alleviating Poverty Through Education

The African Canadian Continuing Education Society (ACCES) is a registered charity that has provided scholarships to underprivileged Post Secondary students in Kenya since 1993. ACCES has sponsored over 4,000 university students, 2,200 college students, 60 physically disabled students and 20 Technical Industrial Vocational Entrepreneurial Training (TIVET) institutions students. Most of our scholars

join the ACCES Alumni Association (AAA) to support new students and some of our scholars have come back to work as staff in our Kakamega Kenya office where they run the office and award scholarships.

We took a boat ride to Crescent Island.

Here you see a young man swam out to sit in a tree and fish for tilapia. Don’t forget, there are hippos here. ⚠️ ‼️⛔️

Ironically, our guide on the island was from Kakamega. At the age of five he was orphaned and lived on the streets until a German man found him and took him to an orphanage. He now has a wife and is expecting his first child anytime.

When asked what he most wanted to do, he said he wanted to “Return the hand.” He wanted to go back to the street to help orphaned children because he remembered what it was like for himself.

To “return the hand” is a Kenyan expression to give back to others what you have been given.

First day.

We arrived late last night in Nairobi and spent our first day recovering from jet lag. Our driver recommended we visit the National Park right in Nairobi. It did not disappoint.

We also went to the Giraffe Centre to feed a few enthusiastic giraffes.

Tonight we have dinner with two former ACCES scholarship recipients to learn from them.

“Listen.”

“Listen to the people.”

That’s the advice I was given by founder Beth Scott as I prepare to arrive in Kenya next week.

Simple. Powerful. Important.

So that’s exactly what I intend to do.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be listening, learning, and sharing the stories of the incredible students, families, and communities connected to ACCES.

Follow along with me.

World Book Day!

This week we celebrated the power of books to open minds, inspire dreams, and create opportunities. Education is one of the strongest pathways out of poverty, giving children the knowledge, confidence, and skills to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.

In Kenya, too many children still face barriers to learning — from lack of school supplies to financial hardship. That’s why the work of .kenya Kenya is so important. By supporting education and creating access to opportunity, they are helping young people break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential.

Every book opened, every lesson learned, and every child supported is a step toward lasting change.

Two years after graduation…..the journey is still unfolding.
Out of 3 students, 2 are volunteering~staying active, building experience and holding onto hope for a permanent job opportunity.
Like many graduates in Kenya, stepping out into the job market is tough. But for students with low income backgrounds, the challenge is even greater~limited networks, fewer connections, and more barriers to getting that first break.
Still, what stands out is resilience: showing up, gaining experience, and refusing to give up on the path forward.
Because sometimes, the journey to opportunity starts with simply staying ready.
