Our Mission is to organize and host agricultural exhibits, offer prize awards to exhibitors, and encourage awareness of agriculture. On November 12th, 1884, at Dennville, a group of interested persons met for the purpose of forming an Agricultural Society in the Township of Strong. The first Strong Agricultural Society Fair was held on October 6th, 1885. In 1903, the Society purchased the present
property from William Phillips. An exhibition hall was built that year, replaced in 1926 by a bigger building which is now used for poultry exhibits and storage. The Strong Agricultural Society (SAS) is a strong supporter of community and family events. We have been fortunate to work with various organizations to host events. The Society is pleased to be able to provide the use of our grounds for events and activities for the community. The Society donated the area of land on which the SSJ Arena currently resides. The community was in need of an arena and in 1955, hockey enthusiasts moved an arena from Huntsville to the northeast corner of the property. In 1978, this was replaced with the Sundridge Strong Joly Arena which serves the community throughout the year, and holds the exhibits for the Annual Fall Fair. The cost of holding our annual fair is covered by our fundraising activities. We try to take advantage of any small provincial grants that are available. Local area businesses provide support and sponsorship for our Annual Fall Fair. The Special Prize List is another opportunity for members of the community to get involved, and sponsor prizes to enhance the fair exhibits. For the past 41 years, an Annual Pancake Breakfast served on Easter Saturday has been a successful event. In 1997, the Heritage House, donated by Mary and David Ballantine from the Mark Hall Estate, Joly Township, was moved to the SAS property. A grand opening of this restored home was held on July 2004. The garden and house allow a glimpse back in time to life 100 years ago. Activities are held at the House to demonstrate quilting, candlemaking, cooking, etc. For 125 years the Society has continued to grow thanks to enthusiastic exhibitors, interested individuals, community groups, and businesses.
