We're excited to announce the recipients of the 2025 Silviculture Innovation Program (SIP) Innovation in Action Grants! 🌲

Out of 40 applications, 21 projects were selected for funding. These projects explore innovative approaches to:
🌿 Recruiting old-growth characteristics
🔥 Using cultural and prescribed fire to build resilient landscapes
🌲 Improving forest resilience through thinning and partial harvesting
📊 Developing tools and data to support better forest management decisions

We're proud to support projects led by First Nations, researchers, community forests, industry partners, and other organizations working together to shape the future of forestry in BC.

🌲 Catch a glimpse of the Coastal Silviculture Committee's Summer Workshop!

From discussing effective brushing strategies, exploring the updated Coastal BEC and learning about gene conservation, the workshop highlighted innovative approaches to managing British Columbia's forests for multiple values beyond timber harvesting.

It was a fantastic opportunity to learn, connect with forest professionals, and exchange ideas. A big thank you to the Coastal Silviculture Committee for organizing such an insightful and engaging workshop!

👋 Meet SIP’s new team member, Aicha Hezit, as the Knowledge Hub Technician.

📚 Aicha has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Royal Roads University and a Diploma in Computer Systems Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

📊 Her work has focused on supporting research within BC’s forestry sector through field
sampling, ecological data management, and supporting the development of resources that
improve access to forest research data. Outside of the forestry sector, she has also supported
wildlife and species at risk studies.

🐦 Aicha is interested in the intersection of forestry and conservation, where generating knowledge
can support management practices that conserve the ecological values in BC's forests. In her free time, she enjoys birdwatching, participating in citizen
science, hiking and camping, and hanging by the beach.

The SIP and BVRC have had a fantastic three years with Caroline Bastable as our Executive Director. It is time to say farewell and good luck as she moves home to the UK. 💚

We will miss Caroline very much for how she brightens any room she enters, her deep knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in the non-profit sector, the funny poses she strikes for photos, and the sincere positive impact she has had at the Centre and in the SIP.

Thank you Caroline for everything you have done! We wish you the best on your new adventures, and hope to see you soon!

☀️ June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the cultures, histories, knowledge, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

At SIP, we recognize that Indigenous Peoples have stewarded the land since time immemorial and continue to be leaders in caring for forests and ecosystems today. We are committed to building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and partners, and to supporting the sharing of knowledge that benefits forests and the people who depend on them.

We are grateful to work alongside Indigenous partners on projects that advance learning, stewardship, and innovation in forestry. Through their knowledge, leadership, and deep connection to the land, Indigenous Peoples continue to make invaluable contributions to the health and sustainability of forests and ecosystems.

On April 13th, one of SIPs 2024 Grantees, the Wetzin’kwa Community Forest, had a pleasant surprise as a special guest dropped by for a night-time visit at an old growth subalpine fir tree. This project focuses on drawing on cumulative knowledge from the 1950s to now, and monitoring partial harvests in the sub-boreal and transitional ecosystems of Northwest BC. This information can be used as a way to connect retired and current practitioners and scientists, and to offer mentorship, project reports and updated interpretive signage across the Bulkley Valley Nordic and Demo Forest trail network.

🌰 This Northern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is only the second captured on video by this project group. They are happy to report that it appears to be very healthy with a thick, muscular tail. These squirrels are hard to capture on camera as they are nocturnal, and are not often abundant in mature sub-boreal forests such as this Community Forest.
