Hey Smithers...
We’re stoked to announce that we’ve signed on as the operator of the new Heart and Health shelter on 3rd ave!
This will be an interim low-barrier year-round shelter that will operate until the new permanent supportive housing and shelter building, to be run by Smithers Community Services Association, is built and ready to open.
Our new shelter will be called The Eddy!
We chose the name together because it speaks to the part of a river where the current slows and stills around obstacles, giving fish a safe place to rest on their travels. And we all know an Eddy or two (an everyman if you will).
Our beautiful shelter logo was designed by Robert Nicholas.
The building will be getting some renovations over the next little while to get ready for opening. We’ll have 25 beds, three staff onsite at all times, a fenced outdoor area, and lots of supportive resources available for guests.
We’ll be starting our hiring process soon. We value lived and living experience, and will be looking for folks who have experience with homelessness, drug use, mental health struggles, or who’ve supported family members or loved ones through those experiences. We also strongly encourage Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ folks to apply. We’re committed to building a team that reflects the community we serve.
Job postings will be coming in the next month or so, but word of mouth can do wonders too. If you know someone you think would be a good fit for our team, feel free to put us in touch early.
It means a lot to us to have the chance to do this work again. We can’t wait to open the doors at the Eddy and work with the community to provide food, a warm bed, and a welcoming home to our pals who’ve been sleeping rough this summer ❤️
