Today, Norfolk General Hospital is lowering its flags for International Overdose Awareness Day.

We remember those who have died or experienced lasting harm from drug poisoning. We also stand with every family, friend and loved one affected by substance use. Every person lost was someone’s family member, friend, neighbour or loved one.

International Overdose Awareness Day raises awareness about drug poisonings and works to reduce stigma. It also encourages conversations about prevention, treatment, harm reduction and recovery.

This year’s theme is “25 Years On. Still Needed.”

For 25 years, communities around the world have remembered those lost and supported those affected.

Most importantly, we want our community to know that help is here.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, you do not have to face it alone.

At NGH and Holmes House, our teams are here to listen, support and help.

More than $2.6 million is coming to Norfolk General Hospital (NGH).

NGH will receive $2,630,205 from the Ontario government to support important repairs and upgrades across the hospital.

The funding will help improve building systems and complete priority infrastructure work.

These investments help keep the hospital safe, reliable and ready to care for our community.

Grand Erie Public Health has confirmed the first evidence of West Nile virus in the region this year after mosquitoes collected in a Simcoe neighbourhood tested positive.

There are simple steps you can take to help protect yourself and your family:

👕 Wear long sleeves and pants when possible
🧴 Use an approved insect repellent, such as one containing DEET
💧 Remove standing water around your home and change water in bird baths regularly

Long weekends are for family, friends, and time to recharge, but sometimes health concerns can’t wait.

Your health matters every day of the year, and as we head into the Civic Holiday here are a few ways you can get the care you need without the wait:

💻 UrgentCareOntario.ca – Connect with virtual or in-person care 24/7, from anywhere in Ontario.

🩺 Your family doctor – The best choice for checkups, prescriptions, and follow-ups.

📞 Health811 – Call or visit online anytime to speak with a registered nurse: health811.ontario.ca

💊 Ontario pharmacists – Available for many common health needs, including UTIs, pink eye, rashes, and more. No appointment is needed.

🚨 If it’s an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department. Patients with the most urgent needs are always seen first, so waits may be longer for non-urgent issues.

To our amazing staff and physicians working this Civic Holiday weekend, thank you for being here for our community. We couldn’t do this without you. ❤️

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and healthy long weekend!

⚠️ An orange air quality warning remains in effect for Haldimand-Norfolk.

Wildfire smoke is affecting air quality in our community. There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

🏠 Stay indoors as much as possible. Keep windows and doors closed.

☀️ If your home becomes too warm, prioritize keeping cool. Use air conditioning or visit a cooler indoor space with cleaner air when possible.

🚶 Limit your time outdoors and avoid strenuous activity. If you must go outside, a well-fitting N95 mask may help reduce your exposure to smoke particles.

💨 Use a clean, good-quality filter in your ventilation system or a portable air cleaner if one is available.

Some people may be more affected by wildfire smoke. This includes older adults, pregnant people, infants, young children, people with heart or lung conditions, and people who work outdoors.

Mild symptoms may include a headache, mild cough, increased mucus, or irritation of your eyes, nose, throat or sinuses.

Seek medical advice if you experience wheezing, dizziness, shortness of breath, a severe cough, an asthma attack or an irregular heartbeat. You can call 811 for free, non-emergency health advice.

Call 911 if you experience chest pain, severe difficulty breathing or another medical emergency.

Please check on family members, friends and neighbours who may need extra support.

🚧 Construction is underway outside Norfolk General Hospital.

Crews are upgrading part of the hospital’s exterior to address leaks, improve insulation, and support better heating and cooling.

All hospital entrances, sidewalks and driveways will remain open. Parking and Emergency Department access will not be affected.

When visiting NGH, you may hear construction noise or see crews working near hospital windows.

Patient privacy remains a top priority. Blinds and curtains will be closed in areas where crews are working.

Thank you for your patience while this important work is completed.
