Exciting news! The LEAP kids have decided to build a bus shelter for our community in a location where many kids wait in the rain for the school bus. Every fourth class we will also be engaging in a food rescue mission, collecting and cooking food for those in need.

This is a call out for:

1. A carpenter mentor to help us on Wednesday mornings
2. Wood!

Please let us know if you have any building wood to donate and also if you'd like to help out a great group of kids doing wonderful things for our community!

What is LEAP??

LEAP is an immersive, experiential and project-based learning program that is community service-based and adopted from Green School Bali, where I had the honour of working as the Program Developer.

Project-based learning (PBL) is a method of education that involves completing projects that result in a realistic product or presentation, and places student inquiry and active involvement at the centre of learning. Through this, learners encounter key concepts and practice critical skills applicable to real-world problems. Due to the many merits of this approach, schools around the world are increasingly practicing PBL in diverse ways. LEAP takes this practice to a whole new level. LEAP teaches kids how to think, not what to think. In my 25 years of teaching experience, it is the most dynamic and effective project-based learning program I have witnessed.

LEAP stands for Learning through Experiential and Authentic Processes and is an immersive learning experience where students engage as a group on real-world, community service projects, pitched to them by community members. Its wall-less design takes students outside and into the community, collaboratively working through the emergent process of investigating and responding to a problem or challenge. Through this, LEAP sees challenges as opportunities where students learn from one another and alongside their facilitators. It is naturally interdisciplinary, and provides students with multiple layers and diverse facets to explore and engage. This rich learning landscape allows each student to flex their unique skills while building and practicing new ones. LEAP’s holistic approach aims to engage the whole person in an academic, emotional, and physical experience, and encourages students to reflect on what they are doing and why it matters. And it's fun!

One local project included designing and building a greenhouse for Little Red Preschool; picked out of a total of 5 different project ideas pitched to them by community members. The LEAP kids learned how to assess a project, break it down into details, create a time management plan, troubleshoot, raise money, create a budget, brainstorm design ideas, apply mathematical theories in real life, and work together as a team. And this is just some of the learning! LEAP celebrates and activates all learning styles. Students are given a greater degree of autonomy and initiatives are student-driven, making learning relevant and meaningful.

Registration is now open for September. 9:30-12;30 Wednesdays
Max. 14 kids. Ages 8 -14.

Calling all Salt Springers! Do you have a creative project you need help with that benefits our community and the Earth? Something you've had in the back of your mind but haven't been able to bring to fruition? If yes...please consider pitching your idea to the LEAP kids this September!

We are looking for 4-8 project ideas to choose from. Past projects that the kids have chosen include: designing and building a recycled greenhouse for Little Red Schoolhouse, harvesting unused food from local farms and cooking for a food rescue project, painting murals on a dilapidated bus shelter and creating a hydroponic system for a local farm!

Come and pitch your idea to us this September and perhaps the kids will choose your idea! No money? No problem we will fundraise, upcycle, recycle etc!

Also- have a child aged 8-14? There are still a few spaces left in this program!
