More than 1.6 million Canadians live with a hearing disability. That is roughly 1 out of every 20 Canadians aged 15 and older.
With so many different people and experiences, it makes sense that there is no single term that fits everyone.
Deaf with a capital D often refers to a cultural identity connected to Deaf community, culture, and sign language. Lowercase deaf may describe the physical experience of not hearing. Others identify as Hard of Hearing.
The term hearing impaired is becoming less common because many people feel it focuses on something being wrong or missing.
The best approach is simple: listen to the language people use to describe themselves and follow their lead. Respectful language is an important part of creating communities where everyone feels recognized and included.

Did you know that more than 1.6 million Canadians live with a hearing disability?

That is enough people to fill BC Place nearly 30 times.

September is Deaf Awareness Month, a time to celebrate Deaf culture, Deaf communities, and the many ways people connect, communicate, learn, work, and participate in community life.

Community inclusion starts with recognizing that communication is not one-size-fits-all. Whether someone communicates through speech, sign language, technology, visual supports, or a combination of methods, everyone deserves opportunities to participate, contribute, and belong.

Throughout September, we will be sharing information about Deaf culture, respectful language, accessibility, and how we can all help create more inclusive communities.

Think about a room with 10 people with disabilities looking for work. Statistically, only about 5 of them will be employed. In a room of 10 people without disabilities, about 7 will be employed.

The issue isn't talent. It's barriers, assumptions, and missed opportunities.

Canadians with disabilities are employed at a rate of 46%, compared to 66% for Canadians without disabilities. That's a gap of nearly 20 percentage points. Disability Employment Awareness Month reminds us that inclusion doesn't stop at the hiring process. It means creating workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, grow, and succeed.

Community Ventures Society is looking for a Payroll & Accounting Administrator (temporary maternity leave coverage) to join our team.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys payroll, accounting administration, working with detailed information, and being part of a collaborative team. You'll play an important role supporting our employees while helping ensure payroll and reporting processes run smoothly.

Community Ventures Society is seeking a compassionate and reliable Child & Youth Home Support Worker to support a youth with developmental disabilities in their home and community. Duties include facilitating community activities, teaching life skills, fostering independence, assisting with homework, cooking, cleaning, and supporting social connections.

Position Details: • Part-time • Saturdays & Sundays, 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM • Starting wage: $29.22/hour • Location: Burnaby

We're looking for someone with experience working with children or youth, a valid Class 5 driver's licence, reliable transportation, current First Aid training, and a positive attitude.
