Community Project Month – Pinawa Swimming Pool

Project – Community Swim - Fund the Free Swim Program. Goal: $10,600

The LGD of Pinawa is seeking donations to assist with sustaining the "Community Swim" program, a vital recreational initiative that provides all Pinawa residents access to the local pool at no charge. The program typically runs for the duration of the pool season, six days per week (based on the 2025 schedule of Monday through Saturday, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM). This specific time block is dedicated exclusively to Pinawa residents and ensures a safe, inclusive environment.

This program removes financial barriers to physical health and mental well-being, regularly serving 30 to 60 residents per session. It provides families, seniors, and youth with a consistent outlet for exercise and social connection in a supervised setting. Contributions through Community Project Month are vital to offsetting the operational costs of operating the pool (with certified lifeguard staffing) to maintain this high service level.

The Pinawa Foundation will stretch community donations by 50% (to a maximum of $3,000 per project.

Gifts can be made:
➢By cheque payable to Pinawa Foundation and mailed to Box 100, Pinawa, MB R0E 1L0 or placed in the drop box at the LGD Office between May 1st and 31st. One cheque can contribute to all or any of the projects.

Community Project Month – Orville Acres Arena

Project – Brine Line Straightening. Goal: $20,000

Brine Line Straightening Project Phase 2 - this project is a continuation of the Brine Line Straightening Project that was initiated in 2025. In 2025, the Foundation graciously donated funds allowing us to complete Phase 1 which included hiring a contractor to straighten the brine lines and splice together. This work was very laborious and needed to be done by professionals as they are handling the brine coolant lines. While the straightening aspect of the project was completed, the next phase to remove excess sand below lines, reposition the lines, fasten the lines in place, and add sand to completely cover the lines still needs to be completed. Having the lines fastened in place will ensure they no longer shift below the ice during operation. Having a level, built up sand base below the ice, allows for greater operating efficiencies as a less thick ice surface is required to be maintained.

This community recreation hub continues to see growing use each year. Our user groups are expanding, private rentals are increasing and the community use during public skating, sticks and pucks, and the new “shinny” slot we introduced this year have all seen remarkable increases in attendance. We serve the residents and visitors to Pinawa, of all ages!!

Community Project Month – Pinawa Minor Hockey

Project – New Rink Divider. Goal: $9,800

Pinawa Minor Hockey is seeking funding to upgrade our current rink divider system from foam dividers to a permanent aluminum rink divider to better support cross-ice programming for our youngest players (U7 and U9).

At present, we utilize foam dividers; however, they are less durable, require frequent setup and adjustment, and do not provide the same level of stability or long-term reliability as a fixed aluminum system. Upgrading to aluminum dividers will create a more consistent, safe, and efficient setup for both practices and games.

This divider system allows us to split the ice surface into smaller playing areas, enabling multiple games or practices to run simultaneously. Cross-ice hockey is a key component of Hockey Canada’s development model, as it increases player engagement and maximizes skill development.

By utilizing a smaller playing surface, players are more actively involved in the game. Studies show that in cross-ice formats, players receive up to five times more passes and take up to six times more shots compared to full-ice play. This results in more puck touches, quicker decision-making, and improved overall skill progression.

The aluminum rink divider is fully finished on both sides, allowing for safe and efficient use of the ice surface for multiple groups at once.

Community Project Month – Pinawa Minor Baseball

Project – New Equipment. Goal: $5000

The purpose of this project is to purchase essential baseball equipment to support the continued growth and success of Pinawa Minor Baseball in Pinawa. Funding will be used to acquire equipment such as bats, helmets, catcher’s gear, training aids, bases, and other field equipment that will be shared across multiple age divisions. Many of the current items are aging or limited in quantity, which creates barriers to participation and limits the ability to run practices and games efficiently.

This investment will directly improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of baseball programming for youth in the community. Updated equipment will allow more children to participate ensuring that baseball remains an inclusive and affordable sport for families. It will also support volunteer coaches by providing the tools needed to run effective practices that focus on skill development, teamwork, and physical activity.

The benefits of this project extend to the wider community. Youth baseball programs help foster community pride, encourage healthy lifestyles, and create opportunities for families to gather throughout the spring/summer. By strengthening the equipment inventory for Pinawa Minor Baseball, this project will support sustainable recreation programming, increase youth engagement in sport, and continue building a strong sense of community connection through recreation.
