National Disability Employment Awareness Month asks us to recognize the skills and contributions of people with disabilities. It should also make us ask what happens when traditional employment doesn't create space for those skills to be used.

That's why The Raw Carrot exists.

We create permanent, paid, supported employment for people facing barriers to traditional work. Soup is the business, but employment is the purpose.
For our employees, a job can mean having somewhere to be. People who count on you. Skills you get to use. Something you're proud to contribute. And a paycheque with your name on it.

Those things matter because meaningful work is about more than income. It's also about contribution, purpose and belonging. This NDEAM, we're celebrating what becomes possible when people aren't simply invited into the workforce, but are given meaningful opportunities to contribute.

Occasionally, even opportunities designed with significant flexibility can be difficult to sustain. HQ hired a woman living with significant disabilities for a small, remote, project-based role designed to be as manageable as possible. She wanted to work and gave it a try. Recurring infections, chronic illness, pain and extreme fatigue ultimately made the role difficult to sustain.

Eventually, she wrote: "Due to health reasons, I will not be able to continue with The Raw Carrot. I want to thank you for the opportunity to give it a try."

That phrase, "give it a try," stayed with us.

For many people living on the margins, employment can be shaped by health, disability and circumstances that change from week to week. A few hours of work may be manageable at one point and difficult to sustain at another.

The need for income, connection, purpose and dignity remains.

This is why supported employment matters. It creates opportunities for people to participate in meaningful work with support and flexibility that recognize what they can sustainably manage.

Success can take different forms. Sometimes, having the opportunity to participate and contribute matters too.

Thank you STRIDE Employment Services for a thoughtful conversation at the Inclusive Hiring Works breakfast about how jobs can be designed to give more people the chance to contribute.

Workplace flexibility and the right supports can make a real difference in whether someone can get a job and succeed in it. We appreciated hearing the questions and experiences employers and community partners brought to the discussion, and contributing to the panel. 🙌

Happy Thanksgiving! We're feeling especially grateful for the people who bring their talents, hard work and personality to The Raw Carrot every day.

Creating supported employment means creating opportunities for people to earn an income, build confidence and experience the dignity of work. We're pretty thankful we get to do that work together.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and this year's theme is Skills Grow Economies. Disability Inclusion Fuels the Growth.

But skills can only contribute to our economy when people have the opportunity to use them. People with disabilities continue to face barriers to employment, even when they have the skills, ability and desire to work. Workplaces also need to be designed so people can meaningfully participate and succeed.

That's what supported employment can do. In our kitchens, work is adapted to the person. Employees have meaningful responsibilities, support when they need it, and the opportunity to contribute their skills as part of a team.

The result is more than a job. It's income, contribution, purpose and belonging.

This NDEAM, the question isn't whether people have skills to contribute. It's whether we're creating the opportunities for them to use those skills.

One of the things we have been thinking about as The Raw Carrot grows is how much the people behind a model matter to its success. Franchise businesses have learned this over time. You can have a strong model, but replication depends on having people who understand it, believe in it and are committed to making it work in their own community.

That applies to social "franchise" too. The Raw Carrot brings a tested model, along with the training, systems, products, tools and ongoing support needed to launch and operate a site. Our local partners bring something just as important: people who know their community, understand its needs, have local relationships and are ready to lead the work.

A successful site needs people who are willing to learn the model, build local relationships, develop customers, support employees and volunteers, and keep the operation moving forward. They do not need to have all the answers on day one. That is part of what our training and ongoing support are there for.

What matters is having an organization and local leaders who are committed to the work and ready to build something that can become part of their community.

That is one of the reasons we are excited about growing through partnerships with churches and nonprofits across Canada. The right local organization can take a proven model and make it their own in a way that serves the people and community around them.

One of the things we have been thinking about as The Raw Carrot grows is how much work it takes to build and operate a social enterprise well.
A church or nonprofit that wants to create employment in its community should not have to figure all of that out from the beginning. That is the thinking behind The Raw Carrot's model.

Our local partners bring the community: the relationships, local leadership, a suitable kitchen and the commitment to creating employment locally. The Raw Carrot brings the infrastructure that has been built and refined over time: training, systems, products, tools, processes and ongoing support. That gives a local organization a starting point. They can focus on building the work into their own community without having to develop every part of the business from scratch.

There is a bigger reason this matters to us.

Operating a single social enterprise is difficult. Building the infrastructure once and enabling other organizations to replicate it creates the possibility of reaching many more people and communities than one organization could reach on its own.

That is the opportunity we see as we work toward 25 sites and 250 jobs by 2030.
