ONE COMMUNITY. WE’RE NOT BACKING DOWN! 🔥

Yesterday, Accora Village ACORN tenant Union took action, taking time to stand up for our homes and in solidarity with every tenant who couldn’t be there.

We showed up to get a meeting and answers from Ferguslea Properties on repairs, flooding, AGIs, communication, and a redevelopment that could displace nearly 1,000 households.

Security told us to leave. Our tenant leaders, who LIVE here, said: WE LIVE HERE!
So we kept moving. 🚶‍♀️✊
➡️ We marched to the Accora Welcome Centre.
➡️ Security followed us.
➡️ Management came out and accepted our demand letter.

NOW IT’S TIME TO MEET. We’re calling on Ferguslea Properties to sit down with the tenants who live here.

We are building power. And we’re just getting started.

🔥 ACORN STRONG, ALL DAY LONG! 🔥

Big thanks to our leaders Norma and Valerie

🚨 ACTION ALERT 🚨 1,000 HOMES ARE UNDER ATTACK IN ACCORA VILLAGE!

Ferguslea Properties wants to tear down all the townhomes and garden homes in Accora Village.

Listen to ACORN member Norma Jean Quibell talk about what is at stake for the low income and working class families that call Accora Village home.

We are organized, and we are fighting back. JOIN THE ACTION in support of tenants TMW August 11th at 9:30AM - meet up at 41 Woodridge.

The City can and MUST stop the mass demovictions. Ferguslea is applying for approvals from the City for their "Master Plan" to redevelop the entire area into luxury housing for the rich.

👉 Click the link to send a quick email to the City demanding they REJECT Ferguslea's application to demolish affordable family homes! https://acorncanada.org/take_action/tell-city-of-ottawa-to-deny-ferguslea-properties-proposed-demoviction-of-accora-village/

We're glad Ottawa finally has a renoviction bylaw. That's because thousands of tenants refused to give up over the last three years.

But if we're being honest, this isn't the strong bylaw tenants fought for.

Cities like Hamilton and Toronto have shown that stronger protections work. Ottawa had the chance to match those protections, but council stopped short.

Still, none of this would have happened without ACORN’s persistent organizing. Every action, every meeting, every petition, every tenant who told their story helped get us here. Thank you to everyone who stood with us, including our allies and the councillors who supported stronger protections.

This isn't the finish line. It's the starting point.

We're going to keep organizing until Ottawa strengthens this bylaw with key pieces like a qualified persons reports, temporary accommodations, rent gap payments and the other protections tenants deserve. Tenants shouldn't have to leave their homes just because a landlord wants bigger profits.

Ottawa ACORN is at city hall today in anticipation of an all-day council meeting where councillors will vote on a much needed renoviction bylaw. 🏡 BUT that's not all we're doing today! Two cars full of members still managed a pit stop at the Ottawa Hydro HQ on Hunt Club to deliver a letter requesting a meeting with the CEO & leadership team as part of the ACORN International day of action!✊🌎

While ACORN and allies won $100K in the city's budget for a pilot program that will provide 200 AC units to low-income tenants, we know this is just a drop in the bucket! ACORN is calling on Ottawa Hydro to partner with the city to expand (and make permanent) the local AC benefit + join Ontario ACORN 's provincial efforts demanding Doug Ford step up the plate and fund a province-wide air conditioning program.

The BC govt & BC Hydro provided 8,000 AC units. How many has Ontario given? ZERO.

🚨 Join us TOMORROW, Wednesday July 15th at 9:30AM at City Hall (110 Laurier Ave W) for our Renoviction Watch Party as we make sure councillors vote YES for a strong renoviction bylaw! 🚨

For 3 years, ACORN members have been fighting to stop renovictions and keep tenants in their homes. We’ve knocked on doors, held rallies, dropped banners, met with councillors, and brought our stories straight to City Hall.

On June 3rd, ACORN members Sharon Katz, Edward Roué, Rosalinda Klempan and Sara Laviolette stood up and shared why Ottawa needs a strong renoviction bylaw. Tenants know what happens when landlords can push people out with the excuse of “renovations”; families lose their homes, rents go up, and communities get broken apart.

A strong renoviction bylaw means real protections for tenants. It means landlords should have to prove renovations actually require a unit to be empty. It means tenants deserve support to return home and not be pushed out forever.

Tomorrow is a big day. After years of fighting, we are finally at the Council vote but the fight isn’t over until we make sure we get a bylaw that actually protects tenants.

Join ACORN at City Hall and stand with tenants across Ottawa. ✊
