He was the top mathematics graduate at Cambridge University.
England’s best. The doors were all open.

He chose India instead.

Henry Martyn sailed in 1805 at age 24.
He had proposed to a woman named Lydia Grenfell before he left.
She refused to go to India with him.
He went anyway.
He wrote her letters for the rest of his life.
They never married.
He never saw her again.

In India he had tuberculosis.
He knew he was running out of time.
So he worked like it.

He translated the New Testament into Urdu.
He supervised an Arabic translation.
He preached in Hindi.
He debated Muslim and Hindu scholars with such honesty and respect
that even his opponents admired him.

In 1810 his doctors ordered a sea voyage for his health.
He used it to travel to Persia.
He spent almost a year in Shiraz
refining his Persian New Testament with local scholars.
It was the first Persian New Testament since the fifth century.
He presented it to the Shah of Persia.

Then he got on a horse and began the 1,500-mile journey home.

He died on October 16, 1812.
In Tokat, Turkey.
Alone.
Cared for by Armenian Christians who buried him with the honors of a bishop.

He was 31 years old.

In six years he had translated the Bible into three languages.
His work is still used today.

He had said in India while dying:
“Let me burn out for God.”

He said it.
He meant it.
He did.

The mission board said she would never learn Chinese.
She became a Chinese citizen and spoke with a Shanxi accent.

They said she was too old.
She was 28.

They said she was too uneducated.
She led nearly 100 children over a mountain range while wounded and feverish.

Gladys Aylward was a parlour maid from North London who felt God calling her to China.

The China Inland Mission rejected her.

So she saved her wages until she had enough for a one-way ticket across Siberia, packed everything she owned in one suitcase, and went alone.

Russian soldiers stranded her in the Siberian dark.
She kept going.

She grabbed mules by the bridle to drag them into her inn so she could tell the drivers Bible stories.
She stopped a prison riot alone.
She ended footbinding in her district.
She collected abandoned children the way other people collect furniture.

In 1938 the roads were cut off.
She led 94 children into the mountains with no food and no map.
They walked for 12 days singing hymns.
She was wounded and feverish.
She kept walking.

They sat starving on the bank of the Yellow River for four days with no boats in sight.
A soldier heard the children singing and arranged a crossing.
She put her hands over her face and wept.
She then collapsed with typhus fever.

She was not expected to survive.
She lived to 67, dying in Taipei among her children, still working.

The mission board said no.
God said go.

Every child will fail.

They will make mistakes.
They will sin.
They will disappoint you.
They may make decisions that break your heart.

The question is not: will my child ever fail?

The question is: where will my child go when failure comes?

If a child learns that failure always brings rage, rejection, or fear, they may become skilled at hiding.
They will hide their sin.
Their questions.
Their pain.
A child who fears the light will often learn to survive in the dark.

A Christ-centred home does not ignore sin.
It calls sin what it is.
It brings correction.

But it also shows the gospel.
Sin can be confessed.
Grace can be received.
A new beginning is possible in Christ.

Your child is not your reputation.
Their identity must be rooted in Christ, not in performance.

Children need more than self-confidence.
They need the confidence that Christ is faithful, His grace is enough, and His mercy is available when they fall.

Do not only raise "good" children.

Raise children who know where to run when they fail.
Raise children who know Christ.

"From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." - 2 Timothy 3:15
