❤️ RVT MONTH: Celebrating Our Exotics RVT, Brittany ❤️
When your pet comes to Exotics, Brittany is doing so much more than weighing patients and taking vitals.
As our Exotics department’s RVT, Brittany covers it all. Wellness exams and new adoptions, referrals from all over the province, surgery of all sorts, and emergency and critical care in every species. She even sees zoo animals that other hospitals in the area don’t. That means she knows about 20 species groups inside and out, and researches and extrapolates when something less common comes through the door. In her 11-year career, she has seen over 60 different species.
Regularly, Brittany places IO and IV catheters, collects samples, runs f***l, urine and fluid analysis, takes radiographs, assists with ultrasound and CT, and monitors sedation and anesthesia. She also helps with endoscopy and celioscopy, performs dentistry, manages wounds and bandaging, administers chemotherapy, and provides emergency and critical care. Each of these is done across a huge variety of species, and no two cases are ever the same. Getting an IV into a tiny patient takes serious skill, and it’s one of the many things Brittany does with confidence.
Around 60% of her job is client education and husbandry discussions, because so much of exotic pet health starts at home.
There is always more to learn in exotics, and Brittany’s desire to keep learning and growing shows in everything she does.
Brittany, thank you for your expertise and knowledge, and for the care you give to the tiny and not-so-tiny creatures that most veterinary staff never get to see. Your dedication and devotion to your patients are inspiring, and we’re incredibly lucky to have you. ❤️
