Expected trail closures for former Blair Rifle Range summer 2026

From the Federal Dept of Defence:

Good day everyone

Attached is a graphic showing the 2026 work areas in yellow.

I’m pleased to say it has been a year since anything possibly hazardous has been found. Please note as part of DND’s continued efforts to reduce the risk to the public at the former Blair Rifle Range trail closures will continue as work progresses. Closures will vary as work in different areas start in both times and locations. This is to ensure public safety and the safety of the workers on site.

Our priority remains the safety and security of the community.
If you see something odd that looks like it may be a UXO, please follow these steps:
· Don’t touch it and not the location.
· Turn around and leave the area the same way you came in.
· Call 911 or local police.

Should there be any changes to the distribution list feel free to let me know.
Thank-you for your time.

Practicing UXO Safety at the Former Blair Rifle Range in North Vancouver, British Columbia

Training at past military sites often involved the use of ammunition that contained explosives, some of which did not function as intended. These old military munitions are called unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO). UXO may still be present at the former Blair Rifle Range and can be dangerous if disturbed.

The former Blair Rifle Range, located in the Northlands area of North Vancouver, was used by the Canadian Armed Forces for military training from the 1930s to 1960s.

As part of the Department of National Defence’s (DND) regular UXO program work, a site survey and UXO clearance work were completed along trails and open areas in 2018, and UXO were removed from forested areas in winter 2023. New UXO caution signs were also installed throughout the property.

UXO clearance work in 2026
To ensure continued safe community use of the site, DND will continue UXO clearance work from April 1, 2026 to December 1, 2026. This work will be performed between trees, with only trees that pose a hazard to workers being removed if absolutely required. Some low-lying brush will be removed in areas with dense vegetation.
- Work starts: April 1, 2026
- Work ends: December 1, 2026
- Location: See mapped area

Temporary trail closures
For safety reasons, select trails will be closed intermittently while this work is underway
(see figure):
- Red trails intermittent closures: April 1, 2026 to December 1, 2026
Open trails will continue to be safe for the community to use for walking, jogging or biking. As with all former military sites, the community should continue to use good judgment and caution when using the property. Stay on designated trails and refrain from digging or making campfires in the area.

This afternoon we had the pleasure to tour our new Chief Administrative Officer Mike Fox around the Seymour Community!

Starting at Parkgate Community Services Society we met Ellen Clague and much of the team, looking at seniors programs, youth programs and their cooking/meal outreach program.

We toured the Lower Indian River community - Mt. Seymour Park approaches, safety initiatives in the neighbourhood.

Toured Roche Point neighbourhood, Windsor Park, McCartney Park and the surrounding neighbourhood.. spoke about the sports hub around Windsor/Ron Andrews and the age and importance of that facility.

We talked about transportation, including the idea of on-demand community shuttles, which Mr. Fox said he had been part of creating in the City of Lethbridge Alberta - to great benefit for the community there.

Yes we talked about the Mt. Seymour Parkway bike lanes and lowering of the speed limit. 😉, so don’t feel ignored!

It was a great meeting and we look forward to working with him throughout his tenure here!

Welcome to Seymour Mister Fox!

The District of North Vancouver is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Fox as its new Chief Administrative Officer, effective February 3, 2026.

Mike joins the District after serving as the CAO for the City of Port Alberni, where he led transformative initiatives in strategic planning, infrastructure development and community engagement.
