VIMFF's Indigenous Community Film & Mentorship Tour 🎬
Something we've been quietly working on behind the scenes is now officially underway!

Our team has been on the road; screening films, supporting emerging filmmakers, and finding ways to make sure Indigenous storytellers have the resources and opportunities to tell their own stories. We are genuinely honoured to be doing this work and to be welcomed into these communities the way we have been.

Our first stop was Fort Simpson (Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́), Dehcho, Denendeh, where we joined the 7th Annual Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ Film Festival in partnership with Festival Director and Dehcho Dene filmmaker Jonathan Antoine. VIMFF's Director of Programming Ivan Hughes reflected: "The ceremonies began with a performance by the Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation Drummers. Their songs created a welcoming atmosphere rooted in local culture and tradition and set the tone for a festival dedicated to storytelling, community, and cultural connection." From the moment we arrived, it was clear this weekend was going to be something special.

We shared films, sat with Elders, connected with local filmmakers and community members, and had conversations we genuinely weren't expecting. One moment that hasn't left Ivan (in his own words): "Chief Antoine noted that too often Indigenous people are spoken about rather than listened to. And that every story contributes to the history of a people. These reflections underscored the importance of Indigenous-led storytelling, and the role film can play in preserving culture, language, memory, and identity."

We also met emerging filmmakers who were moved to learn that so many of the films we screen are made by the adventurers themselves, no massive production budget, just people with a story and the drive to tell it. Watching that click for someone is one of the best parts of what we get to do here at VIMFF.

We don't take lightly the privilege of being welcomed into these spaces. Collaborating with and uplifting Indigenous communities is something that means a great deal to everyone at VIMFF, and Fort Simpson reminded us of that in the most meaningful way.

NEXT UP: Inukjuak, Nunavik, Northern Quebec. Stay with us here on our social channels as we continue to share more from this inspiring tour!

Do you have old climbing or sailing rope that's no longer suitable for the wall or the water?

VIMFF will be collecting retired rope on behalf of the Tsal'alh Community to support their traditional hunting and fishing practices; dragging game, hanging meat, building fish drying racks, and so much more.

This rope collection is a collaboration between VIMFF and Claudia Bastien, who started this initiative last year and is back to do it again, this time as part of VIMFF Summer Fest happening June 28th.

ROPE COLLECTION INFO:
Drop off your old climbing or sailing rope at Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver on June 28th! We'll be accepting rope on site from 4:00 to 8:00 PM as part of the VIMFF Summer Fest evening program.

Once you've dropped off your rope, stay for our outdoor and mountain film programs! Doors open at 3:30 with DJs, the Adventure Hub, community orgs, outdoor brands, giveaways, product samples, silent auction, food and drinks from R&B Brewing and more.

Come with your rope. Stay for the adventure.
Kukstam to everyone who passes their rope along.

Please join us in celebrating our New Lines: Emerging Filmmakers Grant Recipient Stephanie Ouimet

Funded by the City of Vancouver, this grant offers funding & mentorship support to one emerging filmmaker to create a short film that explores mountain adventure from a fresh and underrepresented perspective.

We’re excited to support Stephanie in her work through this initiative and look forward to seeing her project come to life on the VIMFF big screen for Fall Series 2026.

We at VIMFF are saddened to hear of the passing of Will Stanhope.

Will was a recognized figure in the Canadian climbing community, known for his bold and uncompromising approach to the sport. His ascents and presence in
climbing left a mark on many who followed his career.

Will joined us on the VIMFF stage in 2025 to share parts of his story and he returned again this year to say hello, to catch a few shows, and to show his support to the climbing and outdoor community here in Vancouver.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who knew and climbed with him.
