Vancouver Island, this one's for you! ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Not every part of concussion recovery shows on the outside.

Anxiety, low mood, frustration, and feeling isolated are common after a concussion, especially when symptoms last longer.

These feelings can come from the concussion itself, from having your usual routines and activities disrupted, or from both.

๐Ÿ’™ Support matters. Check-ins with family, friends, teammates, coaches, and health care providers are part of a good concussion management plan.

If someone you know is recovering, reach out and ask how they're doing.

The comeback matters as much as the injury.
Most concussions get better within days to weeks. But up to 30% of people with a diagnosed concussion still have symptoms more than 4 weeks later.
What helps:
๐Ÿชœ Go step by step. Returning to school, work, or sport should be gradual, with a health care provider guiding each step.

โš ๏ธ Don't push through. It can make symptoms worse and make recovery take longer.

๐Ÿฉบ Get follow-up care. If symptoms last, a team of health care providers can help.

75% of British Columbians didn't know that too much rest, like sleeping all day, can slow concussion recovery.

The brain needs the right amount of rest to heal. Old advice like waking someone up constantly or keeping them in total darkness can actually slow things down.

What current best practice recommends:

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Relative rest for the first 24โ€“48 hours at most. Cut back on physical and mental activity, but keep up everyday tasks as long as they don't make symptoms more than mildly and briefly worse.
๐Ÿšถ Then a gradual return to activity, guided by symptoms

๐Ÿ’ก Some people become sensitive to light after a concussion. Adjust screens, lighting, and surroundings to help.

Reporting isn't overreacting. When in doubt, sit them out.

If you think someone might have a concussion:

๐Ÿ›‘ Remove them from play or activity right away
๐Ÿ“… Keep them out for the rest of the day, even if they say they feel fine

Reporting a suspected concussion protects the person and can help them recover faster.

And it's not only up to the injured person. Coaches, teachers, teammates, and colleagues all have a part in speaking up. ๐Ÿค
