Victim Services of Nipissing District, in partnership with North Bay Police Service, provides a charitable Trauma Support Dog Program offering comfort, emotional support, and community outreach to individuals impacted by crime and tragedy since 2018. If you are in crisis or require immediate mental health support, contact the North Bay Regional Hospital Crisis Intervention Program at 705-495-8198. If this is an emergency please dial 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Today we remember those we've lost to overdose, acknowledge the grief of families and friends left behind, and recognize that these losses touch every community, including ours.

If you or someone you love has been affected by substance use or loss, you don't have to carry it alone. Victim Services of Nipissing District offers free, confidential support, 24/7 - 705-472-2649

Let’s show off a special girl for National Dog Day

We are celebrating our furry friends today, but it’s also a chance to recognize the important roles dogs can play in our communities.

K9 Moka has a very important job.

Moka is a fully certified Standard Poodle and Trauma Support K9, trained and placed by the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. Alongside her certified handler, she works with Victim Services of Nipissing District and the North Bay Police Service to provide comfort and emotional support to people impacted by crime and tragedy.

From the Child and Youth Advocacy Centre and North Bay Courthouse to community events, Moka helps children, youth, families and individuals feel supported.

Moka also provides emotional support to first responders and helps build positive connections in our community.

The Support Dog Program is funded entirely through donations and community support, helping provide for Moka’s food, veterinary care, grooming and other essential needs.

So... let's give a huge round of "a-paws" (...had to lol) to our girl Moka🐾

Thank you to I See You Spousal Retreat for inviting us to join their morning psychotherapy workshop this weekend.

Moka’s role was to provide comfort and emotional support to participants.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Nosbonsing, the retreat provides a space for spouses of first responders to come together and connect.

But we still make sure she gets lots of breaks to decompress between her appointments. Here she is with her paws crossed, eyes closed, enjoying a little sunshine before it’s time to get back to doing what she loves.

As we head into the weekend, K9 Moka and the NBPS have a safe reminder.

Some pet owners keep their dog on their lap while driving, and may believe it’s a sign of affection or that their furry friend is safer close by. This is a safety risk.

A dog on your lap can interfere with your ability to properly control your vehicle and can become a serious distraction. In a collision, unrestrained pets can be thrown forward due to the force of impact, increasing the risk of life-threatening injuries to the pet and creating additional dangers for everyone inside the vehicle.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, driving with a pet positioned in a way that interferes with the proper control of your vehicle can result in:

Drive While Crowded (Section 162)
$110 fine + 3 demerit points
($150 fine in Community Safety Zones)

Careless Driving (Section 130)
$490 fine + 6 demerit points, or a summons to Provincial Offences Court

Help keep your four-legged passengers safe:

✅ Secure pets in the back seat with a crash-tested harness
✅ Use a properly secured hard-sided crate in the cargo area
✅ Keep windows closed and use air conditioning to keep pets comfortable

A little preparation can help ensure every passenger arrives safely, including the furry ones 🐾

We’re excited to share that Moka’s colouring books have officially arrived! 🎨

These special colouring books are now available for children and youth accessing support through Victim Services.

Filled with fun activities that spark the imagination and give children opportunities to make their own choices, the books are designed to provide comfort, encourage creativity, and help young people feel a little more at ease during difficult times.
