Steven Evangelatos

We are thrilled to have the drawings of Steven Evangelatos on our walls until September 21st.

This charming collection of black and white ink drawings are whimsical, sometimes humourous and always a doorway into Steven's wondrous imagination.

Steven studied drawing and painting at The Art Student’s League in NYC, The Ontario College of Art and York University. He is an Exhibiting Member of The Canadian Federation of Artists.

An interest in animation led Steven to becoming an accomplished animation director, storyboard artist, designer, and animator with a career spanning over 30 years. He has contributed to hundreds of high-profile animated series, commercials and feature films for major studios like DreamWorks Animation, Apple, Disney and Cartoon Network. (His latest project was overseeing storyboards for the new Peanuts feature “Snoopy Unleashed.”)

The fanciful nature of his profession is reflected in this exhibition of recent art.

Viewing is available whenever the Fireweed Hub is open to the public. Private viewing can be arranged by messaging us through our socials on Facebook or Instagram.

There must be some kind of wonderful happening in Hills that keeps bringing forth such amazing cooks. Karin Dodds and Scott Penner have been growing a market garden for years at Valhalla Meadow Farms and we are delighted that they will be one of our guest cooks at the Night Market this coming Saturday July 4th.

Karin grew up in Ontario on the shores of Lake Huron in a family that loved to cook. They purchased their fresh veggies from the local farmer's market and enjoyed fresh fish from the lake. Karin has been working with food for decades, cooking at ski lodges and serving up fresh healthy and flavour filled food for the school lunch program or catering for community events.

Scott grew up in Saskatchewan where his grandfather instilled in him his farming roots and he was responsible for the garden and worked in the family grocery store. His Mom loved to cook and Scott brought fish home with his Dad. Adventure brought him to the snowy mountains and lakes of the Kootenays 30 years ago and after he met Karin in 2004 the adventures continued in the Kootenays they both love so much.

Karin and Scott moved to Hills in 2007 where they built a life together with their two daughters, the Kootenay dream: growing their own food, fishing in local lakes, raising chickens and processing garden goodness for their pantry and friends. Later they produced enough to sell their vegetables, garlic, hot sauces and condiments at local markets.

Karin and Scott enjoy fish, Asian inspired food, roasted chicken and farm fresh veggies.

It's looking like the rain will abate just in time for the Night Market which will be happening this Saturday, July 4th from 6pm to 9pm at the Fireweed Hub in New Denver.

Many of you will be familiar with Kumi's delicious Sri Lankan curry takeouts at the Fireweed. We are so pleased to welcome her to the Night Market this coming weekend, July 4th where she will be making something especially for this event.

Kumi Smith was born and raised in a tea growing mountain village in Sri Lanka. Though tropical, her homeland is similar to her Canadian home in Hills, with mountains, trees, lakes, waterfalls and lots of fresh country air. Everyone there also has gardens with fresh vegetables. Kumi says that where she grew up all women learned to cook when they were as young as 8 or 9 so she has been cooking traditional Sri Lankan food taught to her by her Mom almost all her life.

Kumi loves to share the rich traditional flavours and foods of her culture with her community here and in turn she receives her inspiration when people reciprocate with appreciation. She said sharing food is one of the best ways to communicate and builds strong connections with community.

When asked about her favourite foods Kumi described a simple delicious Sri Lankan dish using cassava leaves which are chopped, mashed and then sauteed with onion, garlic and traditional spices and served with rice.

We are just days away! The Night Market will be happening this Saturday, July 4th from 6pm to 9pm at the Fireweed Hub in New Denver.
