Big plant sale today,Saturday May 23 at Beban Learning Gardens! 10-1

This is a great time to source transplants of summer crops! We have a fun variety of winter squash this year, plus cucumbers, summer squash and zucchinis.

And… Lettuce, Herbs, Annual and Perennial Flowers, Tomatoes, Eggplant, and many more!

Two hard to find products are a purple Oaxacan Epazote, the Mexican Bean herb; a bi-colour Perilla/Shiso/Gaenip, great in gyoza or wraps.

With the potential for a super El Nino this summer we have pencilled in growing more melons on our site and we have 5 varieties available today.

We have a limited supply of super hot peppers. Descriptions in the first comment.

Beban Learning Gardens Plant Sale! Saturday April 25, 10am to 1pm.

Tomorrow is the 1st of 3 spring plant sales at Beban Learning Gardens! Next two are May 9 and 23.

You’ll find a mix of greens excellent for putting outside now. Our favourite pea, Banana Nano! Scallions, Walking Onions, Leeks. A variety of summer producing Sprouting Broccolis, Cauliflower and Cabbages. Plus Kohlrabi, one of our new favourites at our monthly potlucks. And many more veggie varieties.

Herbs both annual and perennial.

We have excellent selection of perennial pollinator plants, and at $3 for a 4” potted perennial, a great way to get started in perennial flowers!

For the perennial vegetable/permaculture minded, Caucasus Spinach (Hablitzia Tammoides), Homesteaders Kaleidoscope Perennial Kale, Sea Kale.

We have compost worms sold by the handful.

Spring bearing Raspberry and also Black Currant plants.

If you have protected space, Yes, we have some tomatoes. In 4” pots; in gallon pots; in Hanging Baskets.

We also have a table of lovely, large tomato plants in 4” pots, the perfect size for you to pot up to a gallon pots.

A bigger, vigorously growing plant is better to plant out when night-time temperatures are reliably above 10C overnight! This is usually the last half of May. Tip: Put these potted up tomatoes outside on nice days and bring in at night.

PS Our volunteers will counsel you to wait to buy tomatoes at the next big sale! Also that it is far too early to put cucumbers, squash, peppers and so on out in the garden, no matter how many grocers are happy to sell these to you!

We had a fantastic visit with NBIS last week. They kindly helped mix some transplant soil, fill pots and seed squash!

NCGS Volunteer Appreciation Potluck Nov 18, 2025 6-8pm
Nanaimo Unitarian Fellowship Hall
595 Townsite Rd, Nanaimo.

Please join us for our Volunteer Appreciation Potluck to reflect on the past growing and gleaning season.

It will include a very short Meeting where the only items on the agenda are approving the 2026 Budget and reviewing any financial motions put forward by the board.

This is primarily an opportunity to join with fellow gardeners and gleaners, eat good food and enjoy each others company. If you wish to find out more about the society, directors will be present at the potluck and will welcome questions.

Bring a dish to share and join us! This event is scheduled to start at 6pm. Everyone is welcome so feel free to bring friends and family.
