Newfoundland and Labrador Command,The Royal Canadian Legion

Newfoundland and Labrador Command,The Royal Canadian Legion The Legion strives to ensure that the deeds of those who fell are not forgotten.

Whether it is through our promotion and organization of Remembrance Day events in Newfoundland and Labrador, our annual Poppy Campaign, the creation and care of memorials like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the preservation of the records and memories of fallen heroes, youth education or many of the other activities we are involved in, we honour the past. Of course, it is not only to honour the

fallen that we observe Remembrance Day each and every year. As part of our observance, we also acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of all Veterans including currently serving. In fact, through the generosity of Canadians who take part in our Poppy Campaign, we are able to serve Veterans and their families on a daily basis. With a number of advocacy efforts and member services, we ensure that they are cared for and treated with the respect they deserve

We Will Remember Them.

Shallaway's Camerata ensemble is incredbly honoured to perform at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1st, where they will premiere a new commission by Leslee Heys - "Eternal Bright" - and perform the Ode to Newfoundland with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band.

In July 2026, Veterans Affairs Canada and its partners will mark the 110th anniversary of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel with commemorative events in Canada and overseas.

The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel took place on 1 July 1916, during the First World War, as part of the larger Battle of the Somme. That day, about 800 soldiers of the Newfoundland Regiment advanced under heavy fire, suffering heavy losses. Only 68 were able to answer the roll call the next day, with more than 700 killed, wounded or missing. Their service and sacrifice continue to be remembered more than a century later in Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada.

We Will Remember Them.

Today, we remember Captain Richard (Steve) Leary, a devoted soldier, and a loving son, brother, and husband.

Known by his comrades as an exceptional soldier and leader, Steve served as a platoon commander with the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He brought dedication and courage to every role he served.

On June 3, 2008, during his first overseas mission in Afghanistan, Steve was killed in action. He was 32 years old when he died while serving our country.

His courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
