We were pleased to have Professor Gary Chan, Deputy Director-General for the Middle East and Africa, , represented at the 2026 SDG Moment, held on 18 September at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Under the theme “Together, We Can Do It,” the 2026 SDG Moment highlighted the need to accelerate implementation, scale proven solutions, strengthen partnerships, and address the gaps that continue to slow progress towards the 2030 Agenda.

For UNGP, the event reinforced the importance of translating global commitments into practical implementation and measurable outcomes through collaboration across networks, sectors and communities.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2026 delivers a clear message: progress is possible, but the world is not moving fast enough.

Only 36% of assessed SDG targets are on track or showing moderate progress, while 15% have regressed. Yet, important gains in health, social protection, clean energy, digital connectivity and access to essential services prove that collective action can deliver results.

With just four years to 2030, the next phase must be about turning commitments into measurable action—closing the $4 trillion annual SDG financing gap, strengthening international cooperation, accelerating the renewable energy transition, advancing gender equality, and harnessing AI responsibly while protecting trusted, people-centred data.

The road ahead is challenging, but the SDGs remain within reach. Now is the time for decisive action, stronger partnerships and accountability—to finish what we started and leave no one behind.

UNGP at the 2026 United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

UNGP is pleased to share that our Director-General, Professor Tak On (Kelvin) Chan, JP （Kelvin Chan), attended the high-level side event “Accelerating Energy System Innovation and Transition for Equity and Resilience to Advance Global Sustainable Development”, held at the ECOSOC Chamber, United Nations Headquarters, New York, during the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

Jointly organised by GEIDCO , the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, UNDP, UNESCAP, UNESCWA, Sustainable Energy for All, and SDSN, the event brought together senior United Nations officials, government leaders, international organisations, and global experts to advance collaboration on sustainable energy, resilience, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The forum featured distinguished speakers including United Nations Economic and Social Council President H.E. Lok Bahadur Thapa, UN Under-Secretary-General H.E. Li Junhua, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN H.E. Fu Cong, Executive Secretary of United Nations ESCAP H.E. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, IRENA Director-General H.E. Francesco La Camera, senior representatives from United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, UNIDO - United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, IEEE, and other leading international institutions.

Professor Chan’s participation reflects UNGP’s continued engagement in high-level international dialogue and our commitment to fostering global partnerships that accelerate evidence-based, inclusive, and sustainable development.

UNGP is pleased to share that our Director-General, Professor Tak On (Kelvin) Chan, JP, (Kelvin Chan) has been invited to participate in the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance in Geneva on 6–7 July 2026.

As the first high-level United Nations dialogue of its kind dedicated to AI governance, the forum is expected to bring together world leaders from governments, international organisations, academia and the global technology sector to help shape the future rules and direction of artificial intelligence. Participants are expected to include UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, heads of state and government, as well as technology leaders including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft President Brad Smith, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and Turing Award laureate Professor Yoshua Bengio.

Professor Chan's participation follows the United Nations Secretariat's formal acceptance of his recent submission on artificial intelligence governance, which the UN noted "will substantively help shape the agenda of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance." While this invitation is extended in his personal capacity, it reflects the calibre of expertise and international engagement that continues to strengthen UNGP's contribution to the global dialogue on responsible AI, ethics, human rights and sustainable development.

🌞Too Hot to Ignore

The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat—it is already reshaping our cities, communities, and daily lives.

By 2050, an estimated 1.6 billion people living in urban areas could face extreme heat, placing growing pressure on public health, infrastructure, economies, and livelihoods.

At the same time, polar ice is melting at an accelerating rate, sea levels continue to rise, and the natural systems that regulate our climate are being disrupted.

Yet there is reason for hope. Proven solutions are already being implemented across clean energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and sustainable urban development. The challenge now is to accelerate action and scale what works.

The science is clear. The solutions exist. The time to act is now.
