Let's turn a tree planting into a neighbourhood party.

On Saturday, October 24, from 10am to noon, the Essex Region Conservation Authority is planting 100 native trees and shrubs along the Chrysler Canada Greenway, just south of the Kingsville Train Station entrance at 169 Lansdowne Ave. Strong Towns Kingsville is helping spread the word, and ERCA is handling the planting itself.

A two-hour planting is good. Neighbours will show up, put trees in the ground, eat something together, and go home carrying a sapling for their own yard. That's how we have a hand in shaping Kingsville's future. So we want to build a few things around it:

- A tree swap. Local growers, nurseries, and anyone with seedlings to spare bring trees; residents take them home and plant them.
- Food. Coffee, hot chocolate, and other warm things.
- Something for kids. Small jobs they can actually do, and something to take home.
- A table for Rooted in Kingsville, so we can add every tree planted that day to the map.

We need a handful of people to make that happen. Specifically:

- Someone to line up tree donors (nurseries, growers, gardeners with volunteers coming up in their beds)
- Someone on food and drink
- One or two people on the kids' side
- Someone to run the sign-in table and hand out swap trees
- Someone to take photos and help us tell people about it afterward

None of these are big jobs. Most are two or three hours in the weeks ahead plus the morning itself.

Dangerous driving is by design

When people speed on a dangerous street, the usual response is to tell them they should know better.

The familiar response is to post the limit, add a warning sign, enforce it more often, and remind drivers to slow down. While these tools can have a place, they don’t change what the street itself is telling people.

A wide, open road with long sightlines can make 35 or 45mph feel normal, despite the posted speed limit prescribing a number much lower.

That’s why Crash Analysis Studio asks communities to look past the sign and study the street itself. If the goal is safer behavior, the road has to make that behavior feel natural. Otherwise, asking drivers to slow down will be drowned out while the design keeps inviting them to speed up.

This starts with questions like what does this street make easy? What does it make uncomfortable? What small change could help people drive the speed the community is actually asking for?

Smart use of curb space is the difference between a strong local economy and one that will need to keep increasing taxes to sustain its infrastructure. With Kingsville's substantial infrastructure gap, it's time to rethink how we use curb space.

The curb is one of the most valuable pieces of public space a city owns, yet we often use it for just one thing: storing parked cars.

What if that space could do more?

Across the country, cities are changing how curb space is used. Outdoor dining, delivery zones, bike parking, and other flexible uses can help support local businesses, improve mobility, and create more value for the community.

Rethinking how we allocate public space is one of the simplest ways to create more productive and financially resilient places.
