🍂📸 Show Us Your Favourite Valley View!

We're pretty lucky to call the Annapolis Valley home. From rolling farmland and colourful hillsides to quiet trails, beaches, and those little hidden spots you almost don't want to tell anyone about, there's no shortage of beautiful places to explore. 🌳💚

So, we'd love to know...

Where's your favourite scenic spot in the Annapolis Valley?

Maybe it's a well-known lookout, a favourite walking trail, a peaceful spot by the water, or somewhere you stumbled across by accident and never forgot.

And because we know the Valley has some talented photographers (and plenty of people with a camera roll full of beautiful scenery 😉), we'd love to see your pictures, too!

🍂🏡💚 A Little Extra to Be Thankful For This Year

Thanksgiving weekend is here, and at Valley Roots, we have a little something extra to be grateful for this year.

After years of planning, hard work, and the support of so many wonderful people and organizations, our first co-operative housing community is finally becoming home.

This weekend, there are families settling into new spaces, neighbours getting to know one another, children making friends, and the beginnings of a community we've spent years dreaming about. 🌱

Some tables may be surrounded by family and friends. Others might still have moving boxes stacked nearby. 😂 But there's something pretty special about knowing that, for the first time, people are celebrating Thanksgiving in their new homes at Highbury Road.

However you celebrate, whoever you spend it with, or whatever this weekend looks like for you, we hope there's something that brings you a little joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging.

This year, we're especially thankful for the people, partnerships, and community spirit that helped turn an idea into a place to call home.

🏡💚 This Is What We Were Building

For so long, we’ve shared photos of foundations, framing, kitchens, sidewalks, landscaping and all the pieces that went into building Highbury Road.

But sitting here today, watching move-in day unfold, the view looks a little different.

Kids are riding their bikes and making new friends. Neighbours are stopping to introduce themselves and chat. People are carrying boxes through doors, helping each other out and beginning to settle into their new homes.

And suddenly, you realize:

This is what we were building all along.

Not just 32 units. Not just buildings.

A place where kids can ride their bikes together. Where neighbours know one another. Where people can sit outside and talk. Where friendships can begin simply because someone moved in a few doors down.

There will be boxes and chaos for a while yet. 😂 But today, Highbury Road feels a little less like a housing development...

and a whole lot more like home. 💚🌱🏡

The day we’ve been waiting for is finally here!

🌱🏡 It Started With a Goal of 100…

On March 31, 2022, Valley Roots held its first Board meeting.

Around that table was an ambitious goal: help create 100 affordable homes in the Annapolis Valley.

At the time, there were no buildings at Highbury Road. No kitchens. No balconies. No courtyard or little trees growing outside.

Just a goal — and a group of people who believed it was worth working toward.

Today, that goal becomes something you can unlock with a key. 🔑💚

Our first members are moving into Highbury Road.

These 32 homes represent years of planning, partnerships, funding applications, meetings, volunteer hours, design work, construction, problem-solving and the contributions of more people and organizations than we could possibly fit into one Facebook post.

To everyone who helped bring Highbury Road from an idea on paper to a place people can call home: thank you.

And to the members beginning this new chapter here — welcome.

Bring your boxes. Hang your pictures. Meet your neighbours. Make dinner. Sit outside. Plant something. Laugh too loudly occasionally. Make memories.

Make it yours.

Because the buildings may be finished, but the community is only beginning. 🌱

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to reflect on what it means to put down roots.

For those of us who are settlers, building roots in a place also means understanding the roots that were here long before us — and recognizing that the land where we build homes, communities, and futures is the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq.

At Valley Roots, our work is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves a place to belong. Truth and reconciliation ask us to understand that belonging must also be rooted in truth: in learning the history of this land, listening to Indigenous voices, acknowledging the harms of colonialism and the residential school system, and considering the responsibilities we carry forward.

As we build new homes and new communities, may we also work to build relationships rooted in respect, humility, listening, and reconciliation.

We honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, their families and communities, and the generations who continue to carry these experiences.

Every root we put down is also a relationship with the land and with one another. 🧡

🍎 Putting Down Roots in the Annapolis Valley 🍂

Looking for something to do this weekend?

Fall has arrived in the Annapolis Valley, the orchards are full, and Applefest at North Hills Museum is happening this Saturday and Sunday! 🍎

It’s a chance to celebrate the season, local history, and one of the things our Valley does especially well — apples.

And around here, we know a little something about roots. 😉

At Valley Roots Housing Co-op, we believe a home is about more than four walls. It’s having a place where you can put down roots, know your neighbours, become part of a community, and feel like you belong.

🍎 It’s Almost Apple Season in the Valley!
There are some things that just feel like fall in the Annapolis Valley—and heading to an orchard for apples is definitely one of them. 🍂
Apple growing has been part of life in the Valley for more than 400 years, and soon our orchards, farm markets and kitchens will be full of them again.
So we have a very important Valley question:
What’s the BEST thing to do with a fresh Valley apple?
🥧 Apple pie
🍎 Apple crisp
🍏 Apple sauce
🍩 Apple c***r donuts
🧃 Fresh c***r
😋 Or just eat it exactly as it is?
And while we’re talking about things growing in the Valley… 🌱
Our 32 Highbury Road homes have all been allocated, but Valley Roots is still growing.

💚🏡 More Than 50 Years of Supporting Affordable Housing
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming members of the Wolfville Area Inter-Church Council (WAICC) to Highbury Road, where Valley Roots Executive Director Carolyn Sloan gave the group a tour of our first co-operative housing development.
Joining us were Nancy Harber, Marjorie Lewis, Rob Hankinson, Perry Walace and Barbara Aikman, along with WAICC Housing Committee members Wendy Eilott and Mary Norton.
It was an opportunity to show them what has been taking shape at Highbury Road—but also to recognize an organization whose commitment to affordable housing in our communities goes back more than five decades.
WAICC was founded in 1970, bringing local churches together to respond collectively to needs in their community. Affordable housing became an important part of that work early on. WAICC helped establish the Interchurch Housing Society, which created affordable housing for local families, and was also involved in senior housing that eventually became Blomidon View Manor.
More than 50 years later, that commitment continues. 🌱
Valley Roots has been fortunate to benefit from WAICC's support as well. Their funding has helped strengthen our organizational capacity and support the work required to develop proposals for future affordable housing projects.
That work isn't always the part of affordable housing people get to see.
Long before construction begins, there are needs to identify, proposals to develop, partnerships to build, funding to pursue and countless hours of planning required to take a housing idea from “What if?” to “Welcome home.”
Organizations willing to support that work help make the next project possible.
So it was especially meaningful for Carolyn to walk the group through Highbury Road—to stand together inside homes that are now nearly ready for their first members and show our visitors what years of community support, collaboration and persistence can help create. 💚

Thank you for supporting Valley Roots, and for more than five decades of investing in affordable housing and stronger communities throughout our area.
