🏡 Valley Roots Housing Co-op Update 💚

We wanted to share a quick update with our community.

SHORTLIST REVIEW ONGOING

We are currently working through our shortlisted applicants, which means all available homes are technically full at this time. We appreciate everyone's patience as we complete the final steps of the selection process.

CO-OP HOUSING VS. PUBLIC HOUSING

We'd also like to take this opportunity to clarify something that we are often asked about: Valley Roots is an affordable housing co-operative, not public housing.

While both models help address housing needs, they are different. Public Housing is owned and operated by the provincial government, often charging tenants rent geared to income. This co-operative housing, on the other hand, is built by a nonprofit organization as a mixed income pocket neighbourhood that offers affordable and deeply affordable rents to all members, from $575 to $1,100.

Unlike public housing, we only have to verify members' incomes before they move in. After that, their household income can increase and they will still enjoy the same affordability so long as they live in the co-op.

SIGN UP TO BE NOTIFIED OF UNIT AVAILABILITY!

Although applications for our current development are no longer being accepted, we are actively planning for future housing opportunities.

If you're interested in living in a future Valley Roots community, we encourage you to complete our Housing Interest Form. By filling it out, you'll be notified if and when units become available that match what you're looking for, and you'll also be helping us better understand the housing needs in our region as we plan future developments.

🏡 Did You Know? There Isn't Just One Type of Housing Co-op! 💚

Housing co-ops across Canada come in many different forms. Some are apartment buildings in large cities, while others are townhouses, family homes, seniors' communities, or mixed developments. Every co-op is designed to meet the unique needs of the people and communities it serves.

At Valley Roots Housing Co-op, we've created a model that reflects the needs of our region. Our mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, along with fully accessible units, is designed to welcome singles, couples, families, seniors, and people with accessibility needs—all within one supportive community.

We believe there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution to affordable housing. Strong communities are built by listening to local needs and creating housing that reflects the people who call those communities home.

That's exactly what we're working to do at Valley Roots—building affordable co-operative housing that's designed for our communities, by our communities. 💚🏡

🏡 Construction Update! 💚

Things are continuing to take shape at Valley Roots Housing Co-op, and we’re so excited to share a little glimpse of the progress.

Every step forward brings us closer to welcoming our first members home and seeing this community come to life. It’s been incredible watching the vision for Valley Roots grow from an idea into real homes for real people.

We can’t wait for the final reveal and the day we get to say, “Welcome home.” 💚🏡

Stay tuned — there’s so much more to come!

🏡 Did You Know? 💚

Housing co-operatives have been creating strong, connected communities across Nova Scotia for decades. Today, there are approximately 73 housing co-ops across the province, providing homes for more than 1,700 households.

While that may sound like a lot, it's actually a relatively small number for an entire province. That's one of the reasons why new co-op housing developments, like Valley Roots Housing Co-op, are so important.

Housing co-ops offer more than just affordable homes—they create communities where neighbours work together, support one another, and help shape the place they call home.

As we continue to grow, we're excited to be part of the next chapter of co-operative housing in Nova Scotia. We hope Valley Roots will not only provide much-needed homes but also inspire more co-op housing opportunities throughout our region.

Thank you for following our journey and for believing in the power of community. Together, we're helping build a stronger future—one home, one neighbour, and one community at a time. 💚🏡

🏡 What Does It Mean to Live in a Housing Co-op? 💚

One of the things that makes Valley Roots Housing Co-op special is that we're more than just a place to live—we're a community.

Living in a co-op means members work together to help create a safe, welcoming, and well-cared-for place that everyone is proud to call home. While day-to-day responsibilities vary, members are encouraged to participate in the life of the co-op in ways that match their abilities and schedules.

That might include attending member meetings, serving on a committee, helping organize community activities, lending a hand with seasonal clean-ups, or sharing ideas that help the co-op grow and thrive.

Everyone has something valuable to contribute, and every contribution—big or small—helps build a stronger community.

At Valley Roots, we believe that good neighbours look out for one another, celebrate together, and work together to create a place where everyone feels they belong.

We can't wait to welcome our first members and begin building that community together. 💚🏡
