Establishing a New Model to Protect Veterinary Care in Our Community

Access to reliable care for our pets and livestock shouldn’t be fragile. To ensure our region regains access to essential veterinary services, we are incorporating a community-owned veterinary management cooperative—and we are looking for founding shareholders to help build it.

By being responsible for the building and owning the equipment directly, our community keeps the doors open regardless of veterinary turnover. The co-op will employ our core team including Registered Veterinary Technicians, Assistants, while patient-care is delivered by a rotation of locum veterinarians.

How to become a Founding Shareholder?

We are approaching the community to seek individuals who may be interested in becoming founding shareholders. This is a direct investment in community stability—not a traditional financial venture. There is no expectation of dividends or returns for the first 5 years.

Shares Available: 150 shares
Cost: $1,000 per share (can be split among up to 4 people at $250 each)

The Cooperative is currently in the process of becoming incorporated and once that is finalized we will be hosting a presentation for potential shareholders where we will go in depth with all the details.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Drs. Ram and Susan Ramkumar 🩵

The closure of the Kapuskasing Veterinary Hospital marks the end of an incredible era. Rural veterinary medicine requires long hours and personal sacrifice, and for 36 years, Dr. Ram and Dr. Susan Ramkumar have served Kapuskasing and its neighbors with unwavering dedication.

The Lifetime Achievement Award they received in 2023 was not only a recognition of three decades dedicated to practicing veterinary medicine, but also to the lasting impact they will
have as business leaders and pillars of our community. They built more than just a practice; they built a legacy of compassion, perseverance, and community leadership.

While we are saddened to see this chapter come to a close, we also recognize that this retirement and transition is well-earned. We wish them joy, travel, and precious time with family—the simple pleasures that years of 24/7 responsibility often kept at a distance.
As we look to the future, our hope is to find a path that allows veterinary care to continue for the benefit of the people, animals, and agricultural communities of Northern Ontario. We believe one of the greatest ways to honour Drs. Ramkumar’s legacy is not only to recognize their years of service, but to also ensure that the communities continue to have access to veterinary care.

On behalf of the pet owners, farmers, and community members whose lives have been enriched by your dedication, we thank you. Your service has made a lasting difference and your legacy will remain an important part of the story of Kapuskasing and the surrounding area.
