A Heartfelt Thank You to Drs. Ram and Susan Ramkumar 🩵

The closure of the Kapuskasing Veterinary Hospital marks the end of an incredible era. Rural veterinary medicine requires long hours and personal sacrifice, and for 36 years, Dr. Ram and Dr. Susan Ramkumar have served Kapuskasing and its neighbors with unwavering dedication.

The Lifetime Achievement Award they received in 2023 was not only a recognition of three decades dedicated to practicing veterinary medicine, but also to the lasting impact they will
have as business leaders and pillars of our community. They built more than just a practice; they built a legacy of compassion, perseverance, and community leadership.

While we are saddened to see this chapter come to a close, we also recognize that this retirement and transition is well-earned. We wish them joy, travel, and precious time with family—the simple pleasures that years of 24/7 responsibility often kept at a distance.
As we look to the future, our hope is to find a path that allows veterinary care to continue for the benefit of the people, animals, and agricultural communities of Northern Ontario. We believe one of the greatest ways to honour Drs. Ramkumar’s legacy is not only to recognize their years of service, but to also ensure that the communities continue to have access to veterinary care.

On behalf of the pet owners, farmers, and community members whose lives have been enriched by your dedication, we thank you. Your service has made a lasting difference and your legacy will remain an important part of the story of Kapuskasing and the surrounding area.

We are aware of the announced closure of Kapuskasing Veterinary Hospital and understands the concern this news creates for pet owners, livestock producers, and residents across our region.

Over the past several months, we have been exploring opportunities to strengthen and improve veterinary services in Northern Ontario. In light of this recent development, we are taking the time to fully assess the situation and evaluate what options may be available to help maintain access to veterinary care in our community and surrounding areas.

At this time, no decisions have been made. We are actively gathering information and engaging with stakeholders as we consider the best path forward.

Our goal remains simple: to help ensure that residents, animal owners, and livestock producers continue to have access to the veterinary services they need.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding and will keep the public informed as discussions progress.

Something to celebrate!

Pawsitive news for animals in Ontario!

New regulations under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act will prohibit certain cosmetic procedures on cats and dogs, effective January 1, 2027.

The regulation prohibits:
- Declawing in cats
- Devocalization (“debarking”) in dogs
- Ear cropping in dogs

These procedures will only be permitted when a veterinarian determines they are medically necessary for the health of the animal. This marks a meaningful step forward in strengthening protections for animals across the province and reducing unnecessary procedures that impact their wellbeing.

There is still lots more to do but today we will celebrate this win for the animals. We look forward to continued efforts to expand protections and ensure all animals are treated with the respect, dignity, and compassion they deserve.
