💡 FACT FRIDAY | What is a BIA?

You’ve probably heard us say “the BIA”… but do you know what a BIA actually is?

A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a defined area where local commercial property owners and businesses work together, with support from the municipality, to help improve and promote their business district.

And here’s a fun fact: BIAs actually have their roots right here in Ontario! The world’s first BIA was established in Toronto in 1970, when local businesses came together to find a way to strengthen their neighbourhood shopping district.

Today, the idea has spread well beyond Ontario, with similar organizations helping support downtowns and commercial districts across Canada and around the world.

Here in Downtown Ingersoll, our BIA works to support local businesses, promote our downtown, organize community events, contribute to beautification and help make the downtown a place people want to shop, eat, explore and spend time. ❤️

And that’s just the beginning...

👀 Follow along each as we share more about what BIAs do, how they work, where the money comes from, and some things you might be surprised to learn!

If you take a closer look while wandering Downtown Ingersoll, you’ll find pieces of our community’s history hiding in plain sight.

These two downtown buildings have stories to tell — one has served our community as a bank for many years, while another, currently home to a variety store but with an exciting change coming soon, once welcomed crowds as a movie theatre! 🎬

This Wander Wednesday, we want YOU to do a little exploring. 👀

🎬 Help Us Bring Movie Night to Downtown Ingersoll! 🍿✨

The Downtown Ingersoll BIA is getting ready for a FREE community Movie Night, and we’re inviting local businesses and organizations to help us make it an extra-special evening!

Our goal is simple: make a night at the movies accessible to everyone in our community — both physically and financially. By bringing the big screen right to downtown Ingersoll and offering the event completely free of charge, families can enjoy a fun night out together without worrying about the cost.

We have several sponsorship opportunities available, with options to support everything from the movie itself to popcorn and those little extras that make an outdoor movie night memorable. 🌟

Sponsors will receive recognition leading up to and during the event, with additional opportunities available to set up an information table, connect with attendees and be part of the evening.

Interested in helping us create a memorable night under the stars in Downtown Ingersoll? 🌙🎥

📧 Email [email protected] for sponsorship details.

Together, we can make the movies accessible to everyone. ❤️

❤️ THANK YOU, INGERSOLL! ❤️

What a weekend! Our first Hometown Hangout was a wonderful reminder of what makes our community so special.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped bring the event to life — our local businesses, sponsors, vendors, performers, volunteers, community partners, and everyone who contributed their time, energy, ideas and support.

And most importantly, thank you to YOU — our community! Whether you came downtown to shop, grab a bite, enjoy the entertainment, bring the kids, connect with neighbours or simply spend some time together, your support made the day what it was.

Events like Hometown Hangout are about more than what’s happening on the street. They’re about creating reasons to gather, supporting the small businesses that make our downtown unique, and building a stronger sense of community right here at home.

To our downtown businesses: thank you for welcoming our community through your doors and for continuing to invest in Downtown Ingersoll. Your enthusiasm and participation are a huge part of what makes events like this possible.

To everyone who showed up, shared our posts, told a friend, volunteered, sponsored, participated or supported the event in any way — we are incredibly grateful.

Hometown Hangout was created to celebrate local, connect our community and bring people together downtown.

We think Ingersoll understood the assignment. ❤️

Thank you for hanging out with us, Ingersoll!

🚋 DISCOVER DOWNTOWN | The Estelle

Did you know that you could once travel between Ingersoll and Woodstock by streetcar?

From 1900 to 1925, the Woodstock, Thames Valley & Ingersoll Electric Railway connected the two communities. Its streetcar, affectionately known as “The Estelle,” was named after the daughter of Dr. S.R. Ickes, one of the figures behind the railway.

Construction began in July 1900, with service reaching Beachville by November. By June 1901, the line had been extended to Ingersoll, and in 1902 the full 11.5-mile route was complete.

The Estelle travelled from Woodstock along the former Highway 2 toward Ingersoll before entering town along Charles Street West and Oxford Street, with its route ending at the Ingersoll Inn.

For nearly 25 years, this little electric railway helped connect people travelling between Woodstock, Beachville and Ingersoll — long before Highway 401 and the way we travel today!

The railway's final run took place on August 16, 1925, when company-owned buses replaced the streetcars. The company continued operating buses until 1942.

📸 About the photo: While The Estelle travelled all the way to Ingersoll, this particular photograph was taken at the corner of Light Street and Dundas Street in Woodstock.

It’s a fascinating reminder that our downtown’s history extends beyond its buildings and storefronts — even the way people arrived downtown has changed dramatically over the years.

Could you imagine hopping on a streetcar in Downtown Ingersoll for a trip to Woodstock today? 🚋
