✨ This Sunday at the Hall — ES:MO comes to Hornby ✨
The extraordinary duo of Elizabeth Shepherd and Michael Occhipinti, live at the Hornby Community Hall on Sunday, June 14.

Elizabeth Shepherd will be playing the Steinway joined by Michael Occhipinti on guitar!!

A velvety-voiced keyboardist, vocalist, and soul-jazz innovator, Elizabeth Shepherd is known for a sound that blurs jazz, R&B, pop, and hip hop. She has released eight acclaimed albums, received six JUNO nominations and two Polaris Prize nominations, and toured across North America, Europe, Japan, and Latin America.

Michael Occhipinti is one of Canada’s most adventurous guitarists, moving across jazz, funk, R&B, Afro-pop, Sicilian folk music, chamber music, and global traditions. His work as a composer, arranger, and improviser is deeply original.

Together as ES:MO, they bring luminous musicianship and some beautifully reimagined songs to the stage.

Their new album, Sunshine in My Bones, features original songs alongside covers of Nick Drake, Bruce Cockburn, Stevie Wonder, Jackie Shane, and others.

The current Hornby Island Community Quilt is the 49th community quilt, and this beautiful Pride banner continues that generous spirit of shared making, skill, care, and community storytelling.

Created by members of the Hornby Island Quilters Guild, the banner is a quilted representation of both the Progress Pride flag and the original Rainbow Pride flag. It was designed, cut, and sewn on Hornby as a gift to the Hornby Pride Parade.

The project was inspired in part by a visit from Bill Stearman, an Ontario-based Quiltivist < quilt activist > whose work uses quilting as a form of storytelling, remembrance, and social change. In October 2025, members of the Hornby Island Quilters Guild attended a “Back Pack show” by Stearman, who was travelling across Canada interviewing Q***r elders, recording their stories, and creating twelve quilts for his project Quilting the Progression of Q***r Rights in Canada.

The Guild was gifted fabric in the eleven colours of the Progress Pride flag, and, inspired by the Canada-wide True Colours Quilt Along, created this banner for our community.

We’ll be sharing more information in our next newsletter,
for now, we are honoured to be looking after this beautiful quilted Pride banner at the Hornby Arts Centre until it joins the Hornby Pride Parade. Photos from Susan Pedersen.

Saturday, June 13
7:30 PM–10:00 PM
Hornby Arts Centre

Written and performed by Dennis Hawkins-Bogle, staged and directed by Heather Gordon Murphy, and produced by Rivercity Players, Campbell River, this powerful collection of 19 autobiographical stories traces a journey from childhood in a small northern town to life as principal of the same high school.

Set in the 1970s, the work explores resilience, humour, heartbreak, hope, and the courage of choosing authenticity in a time that had little room for difference.

“These are my stories — as I remember them.”

More than a coming out story, The Blue Taffeta Party Dress & Other Stories is about coming into a life fully lived — choosing joy over judgment, community over isolation, and authenticity over fear.

Community Landscape Conversation

We warmly invite you to join us on Monday, June 15 from 1pm to 3pm at the Hornby Arts Centre for a Community Landscape Conversation.

Together with local non-profits, including Water Stewardship and the Invasive Plant Control Committee, we will be sharing some of the ways we have been observing and thinking about the outdoor space in front of the Hornby Arts Centre.

We will talk about the parameters we are working with as we begin to develop future landscaping plans, including ecological responsibility, accessibility, native and non-invasive plantings, community use, and care for the wider environment around the Centre.

Most importantly, we would love to hear from you.

What has your experience been of visiting the Arts Centre and its outdoor spaces? What would make the surrounding area feel welcoming, accessible, useful, beautiful, and ecologically sound? What should we be careful to protect, remove, consider, or improve?

This may be the first of many conversations as we develop the site slowly and thoughtfully, and your feedback will help inform the next steps.

Refreshments will be provided. We would be delighted if you can join us.

'Field Recordings of Icebergs Melting' by Hornby Island artist Michael Campbell will be presented from June 19 - August 29 at the Comox Valley Art Gallery.

This multi-media exhibition “. . . brings into play its place in the cultural imagination of a frontier zone of extreme conditions, and its history during the period of European expansion from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The allusion conjures the stream of survey ships that sought the north-west Passage of the North Pole, strove to classify species and peoples, and to map the New World. It further speaks to present day resource extraction and climate change monitoring, the forays of animal rights activists and increasingly, military survey flights asserting territorial claims. . . . Its steam punk ethos with its fusion of Victorian Era and future technologies sets an undercurrent of planetary emergency in motion. . . .” – Jan Allen

Doors open at 4pm on the Friday, June 19. At 5:30pm there will be an artist talk, followed by a reception and hospitality.

Admission is barrier-free (no cost).

We’re really excited about this workshop coming up on Sunday!

Artist Persimmon Blackbridge returns to Hornby Arts to lead a hands-on assemblage workshop, building figures and structures from found objects and collected materials, in the spirit of her exhibition Emma Goldman at the Frick Museum.

This workshop is designed for assemblage techniques that can become more involved and offer room for more advanced making, with adults supervising advanced tools. We will also have activities available for a range of ages, so younger children are very welcome too.

Children under 8 will need to have a parent, guardian, or helper with them.
