Our Calendar Photo Contest is back! Enter your favourite photos of the watershed for a chance to win a $50 gift card!

This year we have 4 different categories that you can enter to win: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. The winners of each category/season will receive a $50 gift card, but the top 12 photos will be put in our 2027 calendar!

Photos can be of anything: the local scenery, your dog, your cat, your kid, wild animals, plants in your backyard or on a trail, they just have to be of something in the Lesser Slave Watershed!

When entering make sure to include: your photo, the season it was taken in, where the photo was taken, and who took the photo in your submission. All submission must be sent to [email protected] to be considered.

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! For our last wildflower of the season we have Canada Goldenrod. This stunning native plant is perfect for areas where you are fighting pesky invasive species! A great way to combat invasive species is to clear the area where they are growing and plant hardy native species, like goldenrod, before they grow back.

Be careful though, just like it can out compete invasive species, goldenrod can also outcompete the flowers you WANT in your garden. Make sure to only plant this beauty where you are okay with it taking over.

And just like that summer is over! Although it may not have been the sunniest summer it was still a great one filled with wading in the rivers for samples, catching bugs with kids, learning about wetlands and bumble bees, interacting with all of you at community events, and taking lots and lots of pictures!

Today is our summer student Ashley's last day. Her sarcasm and work effort will be greatly missed in the office! We wish her the best of luck with the coming school year and we reeeeeeally hope she'll come back and work for us next year!

Join us on Saturday, September 19th (4:30 PM – 7:00 PM) at the Nine-Mile Recreation Area for a guided botanical wander and hands-on plant pressing session.

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! This weeks wildflower is Tall Jacob's Ladder, a delicate, moisture-loving perennial that thrives in wet meadows, riparian areas, and shaded woodland edges.

The mildly sweet, floral-scented flowers attract native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, particularly in humid or damp conditions.

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! This weeks wildflower is Wild Strawberry, a dainty but hardy native plant that produces delicious little fruits that taste 100 times better than the ones in the grocery store.

Wild Strawberries like to spread across the forest floor by sending out runners or stolons, which are modified shoots/stems that can start a new plant wherever they find suitable ground. Because of this you can usually find dense mats of strawberries on the forest floor and gardeners always aspire to have the dense mats in their garden!
