779 Black Knight Squadron

779 Black Knight Squadron A no-cost youth organization. What is 779 (Black Knight) Squadron, (Mount Hope) Hamilton and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets? What do Air Cadets do?

The Royal Canadian Air Cadets is a national youth organization for teens aged 12 to 18, sponsored by the Air Cadet League (a civilian organization) and the Department of National Defence. The organization is made up many training centres, headquarters, and most importantly, the squadrons, of which every cadet is a part of, 779 Black Knight Squadron is one of the 450 Air Cadet squadrons across Cana

da, located in Mount Hope (Hamilton). Air Cadets is Canada’s largest youth group. Air Cadets in 779 (Black Knight) meet at least once a week on Tuesdays from 6:15 to 9:30 pm at 3027 Homestead Drive, Mount Hope - behind Library. While there, they undergo the standard classes that are part of the Air Cadet program. That is, aviation studies, citizenship, leadership, effective speaking, outdoor survival, drill, sports and many more. The training on Tuesday nights is only the core of the program, the standard classes that all squadrons teach. It is the training and the teams on the squadron level, on weekends and other weeknights, that really make up all the opportunities in the program. What are some of the extra activities that 779 (Black Knight) does? First of all, the squadron has many year-long teams, drill team, a range (shooting) team, and Military Band. (Can’t play – We’ll teach you!) We also have ground school classes (prerequisite for glider/private pilot licenses), two or three times a year Cadets participate Outdoor Survival Weekends. Cadets organize dances; participate in Swim competitions, Volley Ball Tournaments and Sports nights. The most popular sports night is the Corn Maze / Orienteering adventure – mixing map reading, great fun… Senior Cadets organize this activity, using skills learned from regular training and summer training and mentoring from Officers. Twice a year cadets can FLY! Gliding Familiarization flights provide the opportunity for cadets to participate flying during the spring and fall.

Do you have a band instrument from 779?
If you are not in the decoration day parade on the 14th, bring your instrument back this Tuesday; otherwise, bring it back on the 16th.

Wrapping up another Cadet year with 779's 57th Annual Ceremonial Review. With minimal practice, the cadets did an outstanding job forming up and march pasts. The Drill team demonstration was very precise, their hard work shows. Band, WOW, throughout the whole marching on and off, they sounded great, and their demonstration also showed the work they put in on their Sunday practices.
We were fortunate to have all three of our supporters represented

Thank you to all the staff and volunteers for a great training year.

We lost a great one today. Fred Hopkinson has passed away. You may know him from Air Cadets or his contributions to CWH or the Hamilton International Air Show. Locally, he was a big part of 735 Firebird Squadron in Dundas and 779 Black Knight Squadron in Mount Hope. He also had many roles in the Federal and Provincial Air Cadet League Organizations.
A few of us recently got to visit and present Fred with his 65-year pin for service to the Air Cadets. (he earned in 2024)

A great summary of his cadet career was aired in 2018 when Fred received his Distinguished Service Medal from the OPC. Facebook blocks news feeds, but you can search Fred Hopkinson CHCH.

Fred will be remembered as the father of the OPC Debate Competition. Before Covid, I believe in its 16th year, there were 26 teams from across the province. Post-COVID, it was not back to usual, and the debating competition needed a jump start, which Fred and a local team from 779 squadron provided to have a 2023 Debate comp at Mohawk College. Due to many factors, it was not repeated in 2024. A small group has managed to resurrect the competition in 2025, and I am pleased to say it was repeated recently with the 2nd's Fred Hopkinson Invitational Debate, which was held in Fort Erie. We had 10 teams and room to grow, but we do require help in planning and ex*****on. Interested, please reach out.

I will share details of arrangements when they are made.

Thank you, Mohawk School of Aviation, for the great presentation to cadets of 779 Black Knight Squadron. Fantastic to have such a great facility so close. Many cadets were very interested and now have a better understanding of the varied careers in aviation.

Thank you to all who supported the Hamilton Area Air Cadets that were out tagging this week. There are 5 Air Cadet squadrons in Hamilton, Dundas, Stoney Creek, and Binbrook. There are over 400, 12 to 18 year olds in these areas participating in the program, learning many life skills and citizenship and yes a few may one day be pilots in the miltary or the pilot taking you down south.
If you missed us and would like to support the over 200 cadets at the Mount Hope Squadron.
