If you worked more than 44 hours in a week, you may be entitled to overtime pay! Always check your paystub, and speak up if something doesn't look right. You have the right to ask about your pay, and to file a claim with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development for employment standards violations.

We had the honour of visiting our local OPSEU L262 picket line at Lynwood Charlton Center with our summer students Annika & Yunis.

They are in week 7 of their strike for pay post Bill 124 “wage suppression bill,” which capped their pay to 1% increases a year and cut their wages below inflation.

We've had a busy 2026 so far!

Since entering into a funding agreement with the Law Foundation of Ontario in late 2025, Solidarity Place has hit the ground running. We've expanded our team, built new community partnerships, and continued growing our Know Your Rights programming across Hamilton and beyond.

We're excited for an energizing summer ahead and grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.

Solidarity Place Worker Education Centre, Ward 4 City of Hamilton Councillor Tammy Hwang, The Hamilton & District Labour Council (HDLC), and the Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre (HARRC) stand together to affirm that hate has no place anywhere in Hamilton, including East Hamilton.

On Sunday June 14, a white nationalist neo-N**i active club targeted a local community organization at Solidarity Place. This neo-N**i group posted hateful rhetoric on the exterior of the building, brandished banners with racist messaging, chanted racist slogans, and made N**i salutes.

Not only was this an attack on workers, the labour movement, and the values of solidarity, inclusion, and mutual support we hold in Hamilton, but it was also a targeted act of intimidation against racialized communities and their allies in our city.

We unequivocally condemn this act and will not be intimidated by cowardly acts of hate intended to divide our neighbourhoods.

Solidarity Place reported the incident and provided security footage to the Hamilton Police Service and its Hate Crime unit. This group is active in Hamilton and known to the police.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of hate-motivated incidents, reflecting a broader rise in organized white supremacist activity. We are calling on the Hamilton Police Service for a thorough investigation of this incident and the activities of this group.

Hamilton’s strength comes from our solidarity and our commitment to supporting one another across diverse communities. We will meet hate with unity and courage.

We are seeking two motivated and community-minded summer students to serve as social services program planners. The successful candidate will play a vital role in conducting outreach and strengthening connections with local union groups, community partners, and employment service agencies. The goal of this work is to increase awareness and participation in education, training programs and direct support services offered through Solidarity Place, particularly for individuals facing barriers to employment.

We're happy to announce that we recently wrapped up our second cohort of the Work Ready: Skills & Safety Program, held in collaboration with Immigrants Working Centre . All of our amazing students attended a 6-day intensive course that taught them about their workplace rights in Ontario. Topics included the Employment Standards Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the importance of Unionization & Collective Action at Work.

So far, over 20 students have graduated from this unique program. We're confident that all of our graduates will utilize this training to become leaders in their workplaces, advocating for decent and fair work!
